Lancers Win Series with Presbyterian with 8-0 Victory

Chapin faces two over minimum, Lancers bang out 12 hits, improving to 4-2 in Big South

FARMVILLE, Va. — Sophomore right-hander Maggie Chapin hurled her fifth complete-game shutout of the season, allowing just one hit, as the Longwood softball team posted an 8-0 victory in five innings over Presbyterian to split its Saturday doubleheader and win the weekend series at Lancer Field.

The Lancers walked off with a win against the Blue Hose for a second consecutive day when Lauren Fox beat out an bouncer to third base that scored pinch runner Kate Westmiller for the victory.

Presbyterian (12-23, 3-3 Big South) took the first game of the day, 6-1, to even the series before Longwood (11-20, 4-2) scored in four of five innings to claim the rubber match.

Lauren Taylor hit her first home run of the season and the 19th of her career to left field as part of a four-run second inning that gave Longwood a 6-0 cushion in the second game. Taylor finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and and two runs scored. Kayley DeVivi was 3-for-3 with three runs driven in, helping to lead the Lancers' 12-hit attack. Fox was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI after having her seven-game hitting streak snapped in the opener.

Chapin surrendered just a leadoff single to Kelby Goodrum and a walk to Kaitlyn Tucker in the first inning, but Kasey Wolfe grounded into a double play to squelch the threat. Chapin struck out Kendall Owens to close the inning and faced the minimum 12 batters the rest of way, finishing with five strikeouts in 64 pitches, to improve to 11-9 on the season.

DeVivi singled home Fox with one out in the bottom of the first to get her team on the board. Taylor led off the second with her homer. Mary Zepeda was then hit by a pitch, moving to second on a groundout and third when Fox singled up the middle. Emily Vinson singled in Zepeda and DeVivi followed with a two-run single through the right side, pushing the lead to 5-0 and knocking Wolfe from the circle.

Taylor made it a 6-0 game in the third after with a run-scoring base hit after Korynna Anderson singled and stole second. Avery Miller lined a double to right that plated Taylor, who reached on an error.

Jenna Greene (6-9) took the loss in the circle, giving up up five earned runs, on six hits, before giving way to Wolfe and Peyton Duncan.

The Blue Hose took the opener, scoring in all but two innings of the first game. Jillian Hewes hit a second-inning solo homer and Owens registered RBI doubles in the third and fifth innings.

DeVivi led off the bottom of the seventh with her seventh home run of the season to left-center field on a 3-2 pitch and the Lancers proceeded to load the bases with two outs. Wolfe, however, came on to retire Avery Drake and earn her first save.

The Lancers are back in action Tuesday hosting Charlotte at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WVHL radio in the Farmville area.
