BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford's pitching staff silenced a solid Longwood offense on Friday afternoon. The Lancers (12-15), who came in with an opportunistic offense, found themselves on the wrong end of both games of a doubleheader, falling 6-3 and 14-0 as the Samford (18-8) bats went off in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers started strong in the first game and jumped out to an early lead.
Keondre Shelton staked the squad to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the second.
Samford answered in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to one, and the two pitching staff's held serve over the next few innings.
However, the Lancers ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth, and Samford capitalized. Jackson Harris gave Samford the lead, and Aaron Walton swatted a three-run home to cap the five-run inning.
Logan Janney cranked his first collegiate home run in the top of the seventh, but Samford's bullpen settled down to keep the Lancers at bay.
Guillermo Garcia Jr. (0-2) took the loss in game one as Michael Ross (6-0) picked up the win for Samford.
In game two Samford kept the Lances off balance all game long. The combination of Alex Flood, Heath Clevenger, and Cole Fyrman combined to throw a no hitter for the Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, Samford capitalized on a seven run second inning to put the game out of reach early while the pitching staff never allowed the Longwood bats to get going.
Sean Gibbons (0-1) took the loss for Longwood, and Alex Flood (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season.
NOTABLES:
Logan Janney hit his first career homerun in game one.
