The Lancers struck in the second inning, but were kept off balance through six as the nation's strikeout leader Riley Huge was able to fan 14.

Longwood wouldn't go away quietly though and gave themselves momentum for game two, as they plated three in the eighth inning. Keondre Shelton, who had a stellar day hit an RBI single before Collin Hughes would bring in two more to bring the score to 8-4.

However, the Winthrop bullpen took care of the back end of the game in the ninth. Winthrop would shut the door in the ninth. Ethan walker (1-1) took the loss as Huge (4-1) took the win.

GAME TWO:

The Lancers once again struck first early in game two thanks to a double steal that would plate Hayden Harris.
Guillermo Garcia, who stuck out six in his 3.0 innings, was dominant and kept the Eagles off balance.

Meanwhile, Willie Havens blasted his third home run of the season to straight away center with a solo shot in the third inning.

In the fifth, Longwood added two more in fifth thanks to a walk by Noach Campanelli and an HBP for Tanner Thomas to give the Lancers a 4-0 lead.

Winthrop would not go away without fight. The Eagles plated runs in the sixth and seventh innings to even the score at six heading into the eighth.

Both sides were scoreless in the eighth, and the Lancers exploded in the ninth. Corbin McCloud blasted a one out double into the right field corner to take an 8-6 lead. Two batters later, Keondre Shelton hit a ball in the exact same spot to trade places with McCloud. From there Longwood would add another run from a bases loaded walk. When the damage was done, Longwood led 10-6.

Ried Dittner came out and put up a second straight goose egg on the scoreboard to close the game out for Longwood. He earned the win (1-1) while Winthrop's Parker Kruglewicz (0-2) took the loss.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Our guys showed resilience today," said Longwood Head Coach Chad Oxendine. "We could've easily packed it up after giving up the lead, but we didn't. We continued to fight."

"Our older guys stepped up in a big spot," Oxendine added. "Corbin McCloud and Keondre came up big for us in the ninth, and that ultimately helped us win game two."

"This team is different, they continue to fight," Oxendine said after his team fell in game one. "We talked about not getting swept on the road, as that's something we did last year a lot. We have a group that's going to continue to fight, and that's the mindset we had going into it."

UP NEXT:

Longwood will play game three at Winthrop, Sunday, March 17 at 1 p.m. The winner will earn the series victory.
