Georgia Tech Plays Longball to Sweep Lancers

Yellow Jackets hit seven home runs, topping Longwood

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech belted walk-off home runs in both ends of a doubleheader against the Longwood softball team, closing the Buzz Classic with a 9-1, 10-2 sweep at Mewborn Field Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets won in six and five innings, respectively, benefiting from a seven-run third inning in the first game and a four-run fourth frame in the second. Georgia Tech, which improved to 3-3 on the season, blasted seven homers on the day, including two by Madison Dobbins (3-for-3, five RBIs, three runs scored) in the second contest.

For Longwood (1-5), Lauren Taylor, Korynna Anderson and Maggie Hiatt collected hits in the first game, while Lauren Fox was 1-for-2 at the top of the lineup, earning a walk and scoring twice in the second game.

The Lancers scored first in both games. Hiatt beat out a bunt for a single that plated pinch runner Mary Zepeda, who entered for Sophia Knock when Knock reached on an error in left field. Zepeda moved to second on a passed ball and scampered home on a second misplay in the inning, this one at first base.

Georgia Tech got to Longwood starter Maggie Chapin (1-2) and reliever Er'ron Burton in the third, as the Yellow Jackets sent 12 to the plate and received a two-run homer to right field from Ella Edgmon and a solo shot to left center by Allen, igniting the rally.

Grace Connelly added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, pushing the lead to 8-1 before Mallorie Black led off of bottom of the sixth, depositing the first pitch she saw over the fence in left field.

Chapin absorbed the loss in the circle for the Lancers, surrendering five earned runs on three hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings. She struck out one before giving way to Burton, who surrendered two earned on four hits and four hits. Sophia Voyles (1-1) went 5 1/3 to earn the game-one win, striking out four and walking one.

Fox and Taylor reached to begin game two – Fox with a single to left and Taylor on a throwing error behind the plate. Georgia Tech right-hander Blake Neleman fanned the next two hitters, but Emily Vinson singled to center to chase Fox in from second for the lead.

Dobbins knotted the game, 1-1, with a one-out solo homer to center off lefty Cierra Gawryluk. The Yellow Jackets took the lead with single runs in the second and third innings. Dobbins broke the game open in the fourth, driving a 0-1 offering from Burton out to left for a grand slam and 7-1 lead.

The Lancers clawed one back in the top of the fifth. With Kayley DeVivi and Fox on first and third, respectively, Knock singled on a bunt, moving to second on an error at third base. Fox scored on the play, cutting the deficit to 7-2.

Back-to-back homers, to left field, however, from Reese Hunter (two-run shot) and Gracyn Tucker (solo blast) put the game away.

Gawryluk (0-1) allowed two runs and four hits in two innings. Neleman (1-1) claimed the win for Georgia Tech, striking out eight over four innings.

Longwood is back in action Friday at East Carolina's Pirate Clash to take on Marshall at 1:30 p.m.
