FARMVILLE, Va. — Graduate guard
Kiki McIntyre scored a game-high-trying 19 points, adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals, but Elon slipped past the Longwood women's basketball team, 74-67, at the Joan Perry Brock Center Tuesday.
The Lancers, who also received 16 points and nine boards from sophomore
Frances Ulysse to tie career highs, erased a 16-point Elon lead in the third quarter, but could not hold on, falling to 4-4 on the season.
"I saw a lot of fight," said Longwood head coach
Erika Lang-Montgomery. "We didn't shoot the ball well the first half, and so it was really important for us to come out and punch early in that third quarter. And I thought our team really responded well to being down, to come back, be aggressive, take the lead."
Despite shooting less than 24 percent in the first half, Longwood closed it on a 7-0 run, extending to 10 consecutive points early in the third quarter, to shave the Phoenix lead to 35-30 when Ulysse hit a free throw.
After Elon built its advantage back to eight at 41-33, the Lancers engineered a 9-0 run to take their first lead since the first quarter at 42-41 with 4:14 left in the quarter on a Ulysse hoop, assisted by
Lili Booker.
Free throws from
Amor Harris and
Mariah Wilson grew the lead to 45-41 with 3:24 left in the period before Elon (4-2) closed the frame with a 10-1 run and a 51-46 edge.
Longwood got to within 53-51 on a Booker free throw with eight minutes remaining, but the Phoenix used a 9-3 run over nearly two minutes to open a 62-54 lead at the 6:20 mark.
The Lancers again closed to four on a Ulysse putback, making it 62-58. An Iycez Adams layup, however, set off 7-0 stretch for Elon which gave the visitor a 69-58 lead.
"We knew it was going to be a dogfight from start to finish," Lang-Montgomery said. "I was really proud of the response, now it's just us. We have to figure out these slow starts. We've had them a couple games, and that's something that our coaching staff will look over the break and try to identify maybe what changes, adjustments we could make to maybe get some better looks, to get us in the game a little early."
The Lancers held a slim 47-45 edge on the glass with the help of a team-high 10 boards from
Otaifo Esenabhalu and scored 25 points off of 16 Elon turnovers in defeat.
Elon put four in double figures, led by Raven Preston with 19 points. She also pulled down 13 rebounds to complete a double-double.
The Phoenix finished the night 29-of-64 (45.3 percent) from the field and was the first team this season to outscore the Lancers' bench, doing so by a 23-10 count.
The Lancers return to action Dec. 6 in the first game of the Shirley Duncan Classic, hosting South Carolina State at 11 a.m.
