FARMVILLE, Va. — Sophomore guard
Amor Harris scored a career-high 23 points off the bench to help the Longwood women's basketball team defeat pesky South Carolina State for a 67-60 win in the opening game of the Shirley Duncan Classic on Friday.
Harris shot 10-for-19 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds in 32 minutes as Longwood (5-4) snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory.
Mariah Wilson chipped in 16 points and a career-high-tying seven steals, while
Kiki McIntyre added a career-high nine steals of her own to go with five assists.
"
Amor Harris, My goodness," said Longwood head coach Erika Lang Montgomery. "Thank goodness she was awake and ready to go this morning and she was a spark off the bench for us, really set the tone for us offensively. And then defensively, we aggressive. we did what we wanted to do, forced them to turn it over. Big defensive performances from
Kiki McIntyre and
Mariah Wilson."
Longwood forced 37 South Carolina State turnovers — including a season-high 23 steals — creating 30 points and turned 16 offensive rebounds into 13 more. The Lancers turned up the defensive intensity in the third quarter, limiting the Bulldogs to just nine points and 23 percent from the field to open a 47-39 advantage on a Wilson 3-pointer in the final minute of the period.
"I think it says a lot about who we are as a team," Lang-Montgomery said of the Lancers' depth. "It doesn't matter what night it is and so I'm happy that we got some production from some different places today."
The Lancers shot 28-for-69 (40.6 percent) from the floor as a team outscored the SCSU bench, 39-15, and snared 33 rebounds with sophomore
Otaifo Esenabhalu grabbing a team-best 11.
South Carolina State (1-9) led, 17-16, after the first quarter and 33-32 at the break despite Harris's 17 first-high points. The Alexandria, Va., native connected on her first seven attempts from the floor.
SCSU, though, shot 54.5 percent in the opening 20 minutes, making 12 shots, including three from 3-point range.
Longwood used a 8-0 spurt over two and a half minutes to take a 42-37 advantage with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter when Esenabhahalu hit a jumper in the paint. After a pair of free throws by SCSU's Taniya McGowan halted the run momentarily, Wilson responded with five consecutive points, including the 3-pointer to extend the lead to eight, matching the Lancers' largest of the day.
South Carolina State rallied to within a bucket a handful of times in the fourth quarter, the last of which when McGowan hit a layup with 2:32 remaining to make it 57-55, but Wilson and Esenabhalu scored on back-to-back possessions to restore a six-point lead.
South Carolina State's Ali Cardwell tallied a layup with 1:15 to play before Wilson put the game out of reach with another trey, assisted by Esenabhalu.
The Bulldogs put four in double figures led by Hardwell with 18 points.
The Lancers face William & Mary Saturday at 4 p.m., on Saturday. The Lancers will host a Teddy Bear Toss, at halftime. Fans can bring a stuffed animal to the game for one free ticket.
