Lancers Smash GPA Record(s)...Again

Athletic Department Posts 3.40 Spring GPA, 3.37 Overall GPA, Both Department Records

FARMVILLE, Va. – Apparently, records are made to be broken. Especially GPA records for Longwood student-athletes.

One year ago, Longwood student-athletes posted their best cumulative GPA in department history, but that record didn't last long.

After final grades were tallied on the 2023 spring semester, the Lancers crushed a pair of GPA records. The student-athletes combined for a 3.40 spring GPA that was the highest mark in any semester on record. On top of that, the Lancers posted a 3.37 cumulative GPA that broke last season's record by more than one-tenth of a point.

"I am so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff in once again achieving at such a high level academically," said Longwood Athletics Director Tim Hall. "This success is the fruit of a lot of labor that goes on outside of the public eye. It is a testament to their drive and determination that our student-athletes are able to do so much in competition and still achieve in the classroom."

On top of that, a whopping 86 student-athletes earned Dean's List honors for a spring GPA that fell between 3.50 and 3.99, and 27 more earned President's List honors for a perfect 4.00 GPA. Both marks improved on last spring's total.

The number would have been even higher, but only full-time undergraduate students are recognized for Dean's List and President's List honors, meaning graduate students were not counted in the list.

A total of 13 teams achieved a GPA at 3.00 or above, tying the department record set last spring.

"Longwood student-athletes continue to exceed our expectations," said Longwood Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services Hannah Ledger. "Their dedication to the classroom is unmatched. Lancer fans should be proud to support these young men and women."

Department-wide, the teams posted a 3.35 GPA in the fall in addition to the 3.40 this spring, and Lancer student-athletes have now achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for 13 straight semesters. The yearly total marks the department's ninth straight academic year with a 3.00 or better.

In the fall, men's tennis and men's soccer led the way with a 3.60 and 3.59 respectively with men's basketball not far behind at 3.37. That same duo again led the charge in the spring, with men's tennis posting a 3.66 while the men's soccer team tallied a 3.65 GPA. Men's golf was a close third in the spring with a 3.41 while also winning a Big South Championship.

On the women's side, women's golf posted the highest team GPA in both the fall (3.67) and spring (3.85), with women's soccer (3.61 fall, 3.59 spring), lacrosse (3.43 fall, 3.63 spring) and softball (3.45 fall, 3.45 spring) all tucked in tight behind.

Several teams also extended long-running streaks with a GPA above 3.00. Both men's golf and women's soccer have now achieved that mark in 29 straight semesters, and field hockey has surpassed the target in 18 straight semesters. Softball just had a GPA above 3.0 for the 13th straight semester, and both basketball teams achieved a 3.00 team GPA as well. For the men, it was the fourth straight season with a 3.00, and the women did so for the fourth time in five years.
