RADFORD, Va. – Emotions ran high last night at Lancer Field, as the Longwood Lancers put the softball world on notice with a
4-3 upset win over #8/9 Duke. Although last night was special, the Lancers had to shift their focus to the task at hand: another Big South conference series against the Radford Highlanders.
Longwood took care of business in game one, defeating Radford by a score of 4-2. Despite conceding the lead early, the Lancers rallied to claim the lead and their fifth consecutive win.
"Radford is a strong team and we had to fight for every pitch," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "Proud of this team for staying focused and earning this win."
The victory marks Longwood's (26-16, 12-3) fifth straight win over Radford (14-31, 3-13), dating back to the 2021 season. The Lancers now hold a 34-12 record all-time against the Highlanders.
Radford got on the board early, sending two runs across the plate in the first inning off of a Cori McMillan RBI triple and sac-fly from Abby Wilson.
The Lancers were held scoreless up until the fourth inning thanks to excellent play on the mound from Radford's Chloe Greene. However,
Korynna Anderson broke the drought, sending a two-run homer over the outfield wall to tie the game at two apiece.
The very next inning, Longwood gained the lead thanks to a clutch two-run shot from
Lauren Taylor that put the Lancers ahead for good 4-2.
On the day, seven Lancers recorded hits, including
Jaden Pone,
Kayley DeVivi,
Maryanna Guy, and
Kate Westmiller in addition to Anderson and Taylor.
Reggie Kanagawa and
Er'ron Burton shared responsibility on the mound today, throwing 3.2 and 3.1 innings respectively. The duo combined for seven strikeouts and only one earned run on route to the conference victory.
The series will continue in Radford on Saturday, as the Lancers and Highlanders will play a doubleheader to decide the series. The first pitch of game two is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"At this point in the season, every game is important," said Dr. Brown. "It will be important for us to trust the process, stay adjustment minded and work to win each pitch.
