Lancers Split Saturday Doubleheader At Radford

Longwood Wins 2-0, Falls 9-8

RADFORD, Va. – Longwood earned themselves another Big South series victory today, splitting today's doubleheader against Radford. The Lancers won game two by a score of 2-0 and fell to the Highlanders in game three 9-8.

The Lancers earned a gritty win in game two thanks to timely hitting and an impressive seven-inning shutout from Maggie Chapin. Longwood's (27-17, 13-4) offense came to life in game three with 12 hits, but Radford (15-32, 4-14) pulled off a miraculous eight-run comeback over the final three innings to win.

"I was very hard of how we fought in game one," said head coach Dr. Megan Brown. "We took care of the ball on both sides and made adjustments at the plate."

Although Longwood only recorded five hits in game one, they were able to find a way. Two early runs curtesy of a Lauren Taylor home-run and Jaden Pone dash home off of a wild pitch gave Longwood its lone two runs.

In addition to Taylor, three other Lancers recorded hits in the game (Pone, Korynna Anderson, Maryanna Guy).

Maggie Chapin was sensational in the circle, tossing a complete seven-inning shutout with six strikeouts and only two hits allowed. The win was Chapin's sixth of the season and fifth complete game.

In game two, the Lancers came out swinging, as they connected on twelve hits through the first five innings. Pone, Taylor, Anderson, Guy, Kelly Park, Emily Vinson, and Kate Westmiller got on the stat sheet for Longwood.

After trailing 8-0, the Highlanders went on an impressive run scoring eight runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game. Qween Edmonds connected on a grounder that scored a Highlanders run in the bottom of the seventh, winning the game for Radford.

The Lancers return home for one final non-conference bout against the University of Virginia on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. from Lancer Field.

"Virginia is good, they're going to come out fighting and strong," said Dr. Brown. "I think it's going to be a good battle. Got to win each pitch."
