CHARLESTON, S.C. – Longwood baseball struck first, but four late runs by Charleston Southern proved to be the difference to open a three-game series on Friday night. The Bucs (18-19, 10-6 Big South) took down Longwood (16-25, 5-11 Big South) 7-4 with four runs in the final four innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers loaded the bases in the first inning and took advantage against Charleston Southern starter Kaleb Hill.
Gregory Ryan, Jr., as he has all year long, put Longwood on the board with an RBI groundout, and
Luis DeLeon doubled in two more runs for a quick 3-0 lead after half an inning.
While Charleston Southern trimmed the lead to 3-2 over the next few innings, Longwood answered with a run in the fourth.
Again, the Lancers put multiple runners on base with no outs, and the Bucs mishandled
Drayven Kowalski's sacrifice bunt. One run came home for a 4-2 Lancer lead.
However, Evan Truitt came on in relief for Hill in the inning for Charleston Southern, and Truitt was lights out from that point on. He struck out 10 while only giving up one hit in the final six innings without giving up a walk. He earned the win, his third of the season.
Meanwhile, the Buccaneer offense tied the game with a pinch hit, RBI single in the sixth from Chandler Tuupo before taking the lead for good on a two-run single by Jared Payne in the seventh.
Aidan Vanvickle took the relief loss for Longwood after coming on with one out in the sixth. He pitched into the seventh.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"That was a tough one tonight," said Longwood Head Coach
Chad Oxendine. "We have to keep our heads up and be ready to compete tomorrow. Execution is the name of the game. If we execute at a high level, we will give ourselves a chance to win."
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
DeLeon led Longwood with two RBI.
Logan Berrier had the start for the Lancers. He pitched into the fourth and gave up three runs, all earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out five.
Three of Longwood's five hits were doubles.
Drew Camp, Ryan and DeLeon each hit one.
UP NEXT:
