DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the second straight day, a Bethune-Cookman starting pitcher gave Longwood baseball fits. Ultimately, Bethune-Cookman (8-4) used a big fourth inning and eight strong innings from Daniel Gaviria to down the Lancers (3-9) 9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
At the start of the game, the stage was set for a pitchers' duel. Gaviria retired Longwood in order through the first three innings, but
Andrew Potojecki nearly matched him pitch for pitch. The redshirt-junior only allowed one hit during his first three innings as well.
The Lancers put a pair on in the fourth, but Gaviria wiggled out of the two-out jam. Meanwhile, the Wildcats used three straight singles to get on the board in the home half of the fourth, and a pair of Lancer errors extended the inning. When the dust settled, Bethune-Cookman led 6-0.
Longwood put runners on base in two of the next three innings, but Gaviria was able to evade the big hit each time, and the Bethune-Cookman offense tacked on late runs.
Gaviria (2-0) earned the win for Bethune-Cookman, and the lefthander has pitched at least 7.0 innings in all three of his starts this season for Bethune-Cookman. He struck out seven with no walks and only four hits against him.
Potojecki (0-2) took the loss for Longwood. He pitched through four innings and was charged with six runs, only two earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out three.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Andrew Melnyk threw two scoreless relief innings for the Lancers. He struck out two and walked two without allowing a hit.
Longwood is in the midst of its second-longest road trip of the season, a seven-game swing.
UP NEXT:
The Lancers will wrap up their seven-game road trip when they travel to take on College of Charleston on back-to-back days this coming week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's game is slated to start at 4 p.m.
