Longwood Battles, Falls At College Of Charleston

Lancers Put Tying Run on Base Late, But Cougars Ease Past Longwood 7-2

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Longwood baseball kept it close on the road at the College of Charleston on Tuesday in the first game of two between the teams. A couple of late runs allowed Charleston (8-3) to pull away in a game that was closer than the final tally, 7-2.

SCORE:

LWU              2         3         1
COFC             7         8         2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

College of Charleston used a Lancer (3-11) error in the first inning to stake out a 3-0 lead, but Longwood refused to go away.

However, College of Charleston's pitching staff made Longwood earn every base they got, and that was enough to ease past the Lancers in a game that was closer than five runs for much of the contest.

The Lancers, who are playing in their sixth straight road game amidst a stretch that sees them play 15 of 20 away from home, knuckled down to keep things close behind a solid outing from Cole Taylor.

Taylor (0-3), who had been a reliever early in his Lancer career, gave Longwood a career-best 6.0 innings. He took a tough luck loss after giving up four runs, but only one was earned, on four hits and four walks.

Cole Mathis (1-0) earned the win for Charleston with five solid innings as a hurler in addition to his work at the plate. He added a pair of base hits and drew a walk while striking out four on the mound.

Jared Kirven keyed the Cougar offense with three RBI, and Luke Wood added two more.

For Longwood, Ethan Barnes got the Lancers on the board in the fifth with an RBI fielder's choice that scored Collin Hughes.

Barnes then helped the Lancers cut the lead to two, 4-2, in the eighth when he motored home from second on a sacrifice fly by Michael Dolberry. After Jim White doubled one batter later, the Lancers put the tying run at the plate. Charleston brought William Privette into the game, and Privette closed it out to earn the save.

Charleston added a trio of insurance runs in the eighth for the final score line.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

"Cole Taylor threw the ball well tonight," said Head Coach Chad Oxendine. "He settled in and gave us a chance to win the game. We had a couple of big mistakes early that hurt us."

"We have another shot tomorrow to compete against a really good College of Charleston program," Oxendine added. "We are battling!"

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Barnes had his first collegiate RBI with his fielder's choice in the fifth inning.

Barnes and Hughes both had stolen bases for the Lancers. Ten players have now stolen a base for Longwood.

The meeting was the first between the two teams.

Loy Hickmon tossed the final two innings for Longwood.

All but one of Longwood's opponents so far this season have a record at .500 or better.
