Bethune-Cookman Evens Series Against Lancers

Sterling Start By Santos Shuts Longwood Bats Down, Wildcats Win 14-2

Daytona Beach, Fla. – Longwood baseball ran into an unsolvable puzzle on Saturday night at Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats' (7-4) right-handed starter, Nolan Santos, tossed a career-best 8.1 innings with 10 strikeouts to lead his team to a 14-2 win over the Lancers (3-9) to even the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Santos (2-0) was nigh unhittable for most of the evening, only surrendering five hits in his 8.1 innings of work. He struck out 10 and now has totaled 30 strikeouts in 18.2 innings this season.

Meanwhile, his offense gave him plenty of run support early and knocked in five runs in the first inning off Longwood starter Ryan Miller (1-1), who took the loss.

Unlike Friday night, where Longwood rallied with six runs in the final four innings to take the series opener, Santos kept the Lancers from having the opportunity.

Longwood struck in the fourth with an RBI double by Hayden Harris that scored Gregory Ryan, but Santos then retired 10 straight through the end of the seventh.

The Lancers added a run in the eighth, but the damage had been done as Bethune-Cookman led by double digits.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"It was a tough start for Ryan Miller," said Head Coach Chad Oxendine. "He will rebound and be better for it. It's tough when you get down big early."

"Santos was dynamite tonight for them," Oxendine added. "The great thing about baseball is that we still have a chance to win the series tomorrow."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Eliot Dix extended his hitting streak to eight straight games.

It is only the third time the Lancers have struck out 10 times in a game this season.

Longwood has gone seven straight games without an error in the field.

UP NEXT:

The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Redshirt-junior righthander Andrew Potojecki gets the start for the Lancers against Bethune-Cookman lefthander Daniel Gaviria. The game will be aired on the Cateye TV Network on YouTube.
