HOW IT HAPPENED:
Delaware State struck first in the top of the first when Wilfredo Mendez hit an RBI single, but Longwood answered by executing a double steal with runners at the corners to tie the score.
From that point, the two pitching staffs kept things close to the vest.
Andrew Potojecki put together a strong start for the Lancers with six strong innings. He only gave up one run on four hits while striking out four without a walk. Evan Harris struck out six for DSU in six innings. Neither one received a decision.
Tanner Thomas gave Longwood a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the fourth, and the Lancers added two more runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 4-1.
Hayden Harris poked an RBI double, and he scored one batter later on a single by
Eliot Dix.
However, Delaware State started to rally in the eighth. With two on base, Evan Bouldin hit a sac fly to open the scoring for the Hornets. DSU loaded the bases and drew an RBI walk, and a two-run single by Alec Rodriguez gave the Hornets the lead.
In the ninth, DSU added three more insurance runs on four hits, and the Hornets turned double plays in both the eighth and ninth innings to prevent Longwood from cutting into the lead.
