HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game was close early as the two starters prevented the big timely hits that can break a tight game open. Both teams loaded the bases in the first, but nothing came of it, and it set the stage for a close game.
David Stirpe hit a solo homer in the second inning to put Mount St. Mary's on the board.
Meanwhile, the Lancers (0-3) were able to get runners on base in each of the first five innings and put runners in scoring position in four of them, but the Mountaineers were able to escape every time. Longwood left 12 runners on base in the game.
In the fifth, Mount St. Mary's took advantage of Longwood's lone error to score three unearned runs, and Stirpe extended the lead to 5-0 in the eight with his second solo home run of the day.
Dix put the Lancers on the board in the ninth as the Lancers once again rallied to put runners on base. He sliced a single to left field to plate one, but a groundout ended the game one batter later.
Jeff Davis (1-0) earned the win for Mount St. Mary's on the mound. He came on in relief in the fifth inning. He tossed 2.1 scoreless, hitless relief innings against two walks and two strikeouts.
Andrew Potojecki (0-1) took a tough loss for Longwood after striking out five in 4.1 innings of work. He walked one and gave up six hits that led to four runs, with only one earned.
WHAT THEY SAID
"I thought we played a much better game today," said Longwood Head Coach
Chad Oxendine. "Our pitchers threw the ball well and we hit some balls hard. We have to keep our heads up and continue to work hard. It's a long season!"
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Andrew Melnyk struck out six batters in a relief pitching stint. He faced 12 batters in 3.1 innings and did not issue a walk while only giving up one run on three hits.
Ried Dittner made his first appearance for the Lancers and struck out a pair against one hit in a scoreless inning of work.
The Lancers drew six walks as a team, with six different players drawing one.
