HOW IT HAPPENED:
Early on, starting pitchers ruled the field for the two teams.
Ryan Miller twirled six shutout frames in his Lancer debut, and he struck out eight while only giving up three hits and three walks. While Luke Pryor walked seven in 4.2 innings, he didn't allow a hit or run for Mount St. Mary's.
Eventually, though, the Lancers took the lead.
Hayden Harris swatted a solo home run in the sixth to break open the scoring, and the Lancers took advantage of an error that led to two more runs in the seventh for a 3-0 lead.
However, Mount St. Mary's trimmed the lead to 3-2 by taking advantage of a pair of Lancer mistakes with the bases loaded.
After Longwood pushed the lead back to two runs on a squeeze play by
Corbin McCloud, Mount Saint Mary's ripped off five straight singles for a two-out rally in the top of the ninth. The base knocks led to six runs before Longwood could stop the avalanche down 8-4.
Greg Ryan singled in a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the damage was done.
Jason Rivera (1-0) earned the win after being the pitcher of record in the eighth for Mount St. Mary's. Jeff Davis came on in relief in the ninth to earn the save.
Brenton Fisher (0-1) took the loss for the Lancers.
