Softball Drops Final Two Games Of JoAnne Graf Classic

Lancers Fall In Close Affair To Purdue And In Rematch Vs. FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Following a historic upset victory over the #4 Florida State Seminoles on Saturday night, Longwood concluded its weekend slate of softball from the JoAnne Graf Classic on Sunday morning. The Lancers dropped a closely contested game to Purdue 3-1 and lost in a rematch of last night's thriller to FSU 5-0.

Maggie Chapin took the mound in Longwood's first game today against the Boilermakers off the heels of a four strikeout and zero hit performance against FSU. She threw six strikeouts in a complete seven inning outing against Purdue.

Er'ron Burton returned to the circle for the Lancers in the day's second contest against the Seminoles following her save against Florida State the night before. Burton held the preseason ACC favorites scoreless through the first three innings, ultimately conceding several runs in the latter half of the game that put FSU on top for good.

Longwood's lone run of the morning came in the bottom of the first inning against Purdue when Lauren Taylor sent Jaden Pone home for her team-leading third RBI of the weekend. In total, eight Longwood batters recorded hits this weekend, including six from reigning Big South Freshman of the Year Jaden Pone and four from catcher Lindsey Hay, both of whom are batted over .400 at the weekend's games.

"Two tough games today," said head coach Dr. Megan Brown. "We had many great takeaways from both sides of the ball that are a testament to the hard work and dedication our young ladies put in each and every day."

The Lancers will use this week to gear up for another road trip, this time to Waco, Texas for the Getterman Classic on February 17-19 hosted by Baylor University. Longwood will again face a formidable lineup of opponents, including the unanimous #1 Oklahoma Sooners, Army, Stephen F. Austin, and the host team (RV) Baylor.

"This weekend was a great starting place for the season," said Dr. Brown. "We saw many encouraging things and we are excited for clarity in areas we can continue to grow and build."
