RICHMOND, Va. – Longwood men's tennis wrapped up their fall season while the women's tennis team opened theirs as both outfits played in the River City Tennis Open in Richmond.
For the men, it closed a solid fall that saw the team put together solid results under first year Director of Tennis
Carlos Lora. During the weekend, the men played matches against players from Richmond, Old Dominion, SMU, William & Mary, Campbell and Georgetown across all singles and doubles play.
The women also pieced together a strong effort on opening weekend as they took the court for the first time. They played matches against Richmond, Georgetown and VCU over the course of three days.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Timéo Puech continued his strong play this fall with a trio of singles wins over the course of three days. The sophomore won all three singles matches in straight sets.
Both
Alejandro Uribe and
Luis Reis had a pair of singles wins as well, and the duo also worked together as doubles partners. They won two doubles matches.
Petar Belosevic and
Lorenzo Meschini also added in singles wins for the men on the weekend.
For the women, both Feline Eijkelenburg and
Alexis Broderick had dramatic comeback wins on Friday, and
Karina Rizvanova played an epic three-set match as well.
Saturday, Rizvanova earned a singles win along with
Phoebe Mitchell. The duo of Rizvanova and Orianna Izarra proved potent, winning doubles matches on both Friday and Saturday. The pairings of Broderick and
Nina Hederich as well as
Wiktoria Czerny and
Mahika Gupta each claimed doubles wins on Friday as well.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"The weekend was a good recap for our men to finish the fall competitions," said Director of Tennis
Carlos Lora. "We not only played against good competition against some of the best mid-major teams in our region but also had a good recap on what we have been trying to build together for this program in the consistent habits that we need to have to be a successful program. I really enjoyed seeing several of our players stay mentally present during their matches even when things were not going their way. With all of the improvement that we have had in the last month and a half on and off the court, I am really excited to see what we can accomplish in the spring season."
"This weekend was a good first test for us on the women's side as we played against some good competition to open up the year," Lora said. "It allowed us to see where everybody on the team stands and to try several different doubles pairings to see what would be the best to move forward with for the team."
"We had some really strong showings in several of our players throughout the weekend where they had comeback wins from having lost the first set, with Feline, Karina and Alexis all doing it," Lora added about the women's team performance. "We also had several other players that had really competitive matches against some tough players where they almost came out with the win. I am certainly looking forward to seeing the entire team back in action next week at the UNCG Invitational."
