Women's Tennis Posts 19 Wins at UNCG Invitiational

Marchetta Leads Way in Singles, van Eijkelenburg and Hederich Lead Doubles Effort

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Longwood women's tennis posted 19 wins between singles and doubles over the weekend at the UNCG Invitational.

Sophia Marchetta led the way in singles with three of the team's 1 wins. Meanwhile, Feline van Eijkelenburg and Nina Hederich each had four doubles wins as the team tried out different doubles combinations.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The weekend began with singles matches on Friday. Marchetta picked up her first singles win with a comeback effort against Appalachian State's Brook Gruber. Marchetta lost the first set 4-6 but rallied to win the second set 6-3 and force a tiebreak.

Wiktoria Czerny and Phoebe Mitchell added singles wins as well. Mitchell also stormed back after dropping the opening set for the first of her two singles wins on the weekend. Czerny cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win in her first match, which was the first of her two singles wins.

Saturday featured plenty of doubles action. Van Eijkelenburg didn't lose any of her three doubles matches, and she added a doubles win on Sunday as well. Hederich also won all three doubles matches she played on Saturday, and she picked up a win on Sunday as well. All in all, the Lancers won six of their 10 doubles matches.

Sunday, Longwood split four doubles matches and then closed the invitational with singles play. Over the course of 16 matches, the Lancers picked up eight wins.

Marchetta again led the way with two singles wins. In her first match of the day, she rallied from first set loss to take out UNCG's Raegan Mitchell 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7-4) in a tiebreaker. She used that same resiliency in her final match, rallying back against ECU's Noelle Talarek. She won the second set 7-5 after falling 2-6 in the first set before winning the tiebreaker.

Czerny and Mitchell added wins of their own in their final singles matches. Czeryny won against Brooke LaFrenz in a nailbiter. She dropped a close first set 5-7 before coming back to win set two 6-4 and then a close tiebreaker. Mitchell won her first set 6-3 against ECU's Anne Low Champion, but Champion took the second set. Mitchell nipped her in the tiebreaker though.

Oriana Izarra, Hederich, Alexis Broderick and van Eijkelenburg all added singles wins as well on Sunday.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I was really impressed with teh performance of the team this weekend," said Longwood Director of Tennis Carlos Lora. "The grit and determination that they all showed through tough matches and situations, and, for the most part, coming out on top in the end showcases that the habits that we are building as a team both on and off the court are certainly paying dividends. I am certainly looking forward to continuing to build with this team towards our last competition of the fall in a couple of weeks at UNCW."
