NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Longwood women's tennis had a plethora of victories and success in their 2022 fall debuts at the two-day CNU Invitational, hosted by Christopher Newport. Not to be overlooked, the new Lancers freshman went undefeated over the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers as a team won eight of their nine doubles contests and 21 out of 23 singles matches. Returners
Emma Nurgazieva,
Maria Saez,
Karina Rizvanova and
Zoe Barton combined for a perfect 13-0 weekend while
Wiktoria Czerny added a couple of wins en route to a 2-1 weekend herself.
Longwood Freshman
Mahika Gupta and
Alexis Broderick both went 2-0 in their first weekend in a Lancers uniform.
Sophia Marchetta; a transfer from Limestone college, started her Longwood career 2-1.
In doubles, the tandems of Nurgazieva and Rizvanova went 2-1 across three matches. Saez and Barton also added two wins in doubles through the weekend. Marchetta, Gupta and Broederick also nabbed their first collegiate victories in doubles at the Invitational.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"The girls showed up and played very well all weekend at the Christopher Newport Invitational," said second year director of tennis,
Adam Jackson." Our singles play was outstanding and it was great to see the ladies close out a lot of close sets. I'm thrilled that our freshman went undefeated on the weekend and I am excited to watch the teams progress continue as the fall continues."
