FARMVILLE, Va. – Sydney Backstrom has already littered her name throughout the Longwood softball record books.
Â
Now, the Lancer graduate student and Big South Pitcher of the Year can add a 14-strikeout one-hitter in the Big South Championship Tournament to the list.
"It was a strong start in the tournament for Backstrom," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "It was an overall great team win, and I'm proud of their fight and hard work until the end."Â
Â
Backstrom (21-11) outdueled Jessie Marvin, the ace for No. 6 seed Radford to lead No. 3 seed Longwood (31-22) to a 1-0 win.
Â
For Backstrom, it was her 28
th complete game of the season, and it was the 10
th time she has struck out at least 10 batters in a game. She has totaled 271 strikeouts on the season, nearly 100 more than her previous season-high set last year at 189.
Â
That powered a Longwood side that has now won seven straight to clinch a share of the Big South regular season-title, but a three-way tiebreaker went against them to bump the team to the third seed.
Â
Meanwhile, it was a tough-luck loss for Marvin (10-13) after the graduate student only surrendered one run without issuing a walk. She danced around nine hits and limited the damage.
Â
However, Radford (19-28) was unable to solve Backstrom, who has struck out at least 10 in four of her past five games.
Â
Longwood's offense threatened with baserunners in three straight innings from the second through the fourth before finally breaking through in the fifth. Singles from
Korynna Anderson,
Jaden Pone and
Lauren Fox loaded the bases with one out, and
Kayley DeVivi hit a line drive to centerfield to score Anderson from third.
Â
Radford put a pair of runners on base with back-to-back walks in the seventh inning, but Backstrom fanned Taylor Breidt to win the game.
Â
The Lancers will advance to play No. 2 seed Campbell on Thursday afternoon. The game time has been shifted to 1:30 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather on Friday.
"Tomorrow we need to stay present and keep keeping it simple from pitch to pitch," said Coach Brown.Â
Â
The tournament is being aired on ESPN+, and all Longwood games are aired on the radio on WVHL 92.9 Kickin' Country.
