FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood finished off the Gardner-Webb series Sunday afternoon with another shutout, 7-0 win.
"All our young ladies came out together, and played well," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "They did the job they were suppose to do. Honestly, this was just us playing Longwood softball, they worked really hard together as a team to do the things we talked about."
Sydney Backstrom owned the circle once again throwing back-to-back no-hitters to finish off the weekend.
On top of serving up another no hitter to the Runnin' Bulldogs (15-26, 7-17 Big South), Backstrom also set a new program record for strikeouts in a single-game with 16 K's at the plate.
The super senior is now 19-11 on the year, and just one win away from cracking the top ten at Longwood with number of wins in a single-season.
Longwood (27-22, 18-6 Big South) came out blazing from the batter's box, yet again, finding success in the bottom of the first.
Jaden Pone and
Kayley DeVivi led things off with speed helping the two reach to kick off the game.
Longwood with an early 3-0 lead continued the momentum into the third.
Alexis Wayland led the inning off with a double soaring over the center fielder, bouncing off the outfield wall.
Kelly Park at the plate, sent one over the left center fence grabbing the two run homer to start the home side of the third.
Longwood was able to load the bases later in the inning, scoring two more before Gardner-Webb retired the inning.
Following the weekend, Backstrom has now blown the single-season strikeout total record out of the water, currently sitting with 225. The previous number one record holder was both Elizabeth McCarthy (2013) and Briana Wells (2011) with 203 strikeouts in a single-season.
The Lancers have recorded eight shutouts on the year, and after the weekend, recorded more wins last the 2021 season.
"Playing as a team, playing together thats when we see our best softball," said Coach Brown.
The Big South still sees a dead lock tie for second in the standings, which include Longwood, Campbell and Presbyterian.
Next weekend holds the final three regular season games for the Lancers. Longwood will host Winthrop Saturday and Sunday and will include the 2022 Senior Day Celebration on Sunday, May 8.
