Farmville, Va. – A six goal performance from
Lauren Cerretani and trio of goals from
Nicole Fordyce and
Ellie Rumbaugh led the Longwood Lancers over the Howard Bison on Sunday afternoon.
For the Lancers, six players in Ainsle Rowlinson,
Nicole Fordyce,
Emily Cate Smith,
Lauren Cerretani,
Haley Moomau and
Ellie Rumbaugh all had at least three points and four had numerous assists on the day.
A four goal first quarter from Quai Skeete-Ridley helped the Bison (1-5) keep the game at bay through the first quarter. Skeete-Ridley would end up with five goals on the day, and fellow Bison Taylor Matthews enjoyed a three goal day as well. After an even first quarter, it was all Longwood.
After allowing four goals in the first quarter, the Longwood defense surrendered two goals per quarter the rest of the way.
Lauren Cerretani had five ground balls and
Rachel Abraham had three ground balls to help the Lancers secure possession. The defense as a whole caused 10 Bison turnovers on the afternoon.
The Bison jumped to a two goal lead thanks to Quai Skeete-Ridley nabbing both unassisted.
Lauren Cerretani responded with two of her own to even the game up. A total of four goals, two from each side, would send the game to the second quarter even.
Howard would jump out in the second quarter to score twice and give them the 6-4 lead. However the Lancers would respond by scoring 11 unanswered goals through the second and start of the third quarter. A balanced attack saw six of the 11 goals having an assist on the play.
After the 6-4 Bison lead, Longwood went on a 15-6 run to finish the game, and secure their second win on the year.
Longwood is back in action Saturday March 12
th when they host Saint Francis University back at Elizabeth Burger Jackson field in Farmville.
