Farmville, Va.- The Longwood Lancers claimed their fourth straight victory with a 24-1 win over Norfolk State. The victory was the seventh of the season for Longwood.
"We need to continue to get better," said head coach
Chad Oxendine following the Lancers final test before Big South play. "There were a couple of things that we didn't necessarily do wrong but we need to improve on and we need to continue to get better as we go into conference play."
Michael Dolberry led the Lancers offense today, reaching base five times, scoring three runs and hitting home three Lancers. Longwood as a whole finished with 14 hits and 17 walks.
"Just get on and let my teammates get me in," explained
Michael Dolberry on his approach to today's game. "Just trusting myself and staying within myself and not try to do too much. Staying being myself and not trying to be something more."
Longwood got the scoring going early in the first inning on a ground out to third from
Hunter Gilliam, but
Hayden Harris crossed home. Longwood would never look back.
The Lancers ripped the game wide open with seven runs in the bottom half of the second inning, highlighted by a
Gregory Ryan two run home run that cleared the left field fence. Ryan has three home runs in the last seven days.
Longwood would scatter 16 runs over the next five innings, including 15 walks in those four frames. The Lancers had an impressive 14 batters reach base, and eight of them reached more than once in the contest.
The loan Spartan run would come via the big fly when Kam Walker hit one over the left field fence.
Cole Taylor (1-1) started on the mound for Longwood. The junior went five shutout innings and surrendered just four hits on his way to picking up his first quality start of the season, and first career win.
Kevin Gunn Noah Eaker Jack Lamb, and
JR Parrish got an inning each in relief, and pitched four innings, allowing just four hits and one run.
Dylan Flint (0-1) started on the mound for Norfolk State and picked up the loss. Flint finished with two innings pitched, six hits allowed, four earned runs and he struck out one batter. The Spartans would use five relief pitchers the rest of the way, and they combined to allow.
Longwood return to action March 18
th when they host UNC Asheville for a three game, weekend series to open up Big South play.
