Old Dominion Takes Out Longwood 15-6

Mullenbach, Mills Combine For Eight Goals To Spoil Longwood's Home Opener

FARMVILLE, Va. – Saturday afternoon, Old Dominion women's lacrosse took down Longwood 15-6 at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.

Maddie Mullenbach and Ali Mills provided the boost for the Monarch (2-3), with the duo scoring four goals apiece to lead ODU. They combined for six of those goals after halftime, which coupled well with a lockdown defensive effort that limited Longwood to six goals.

That proved to be enough to overcome multi-goal games from Claire Libby and Lauren Cerretani, who each scored two goals apiece for a Lonwgood (1-2) side that battled throughout. Amelia Carlile also piled up 13 saves in goal, a new career high for the freshman.

"I really like the hustle we displayed today," said Longwood head coach Elaine Jones. "Our defense, led by Julia Koenig and Hannah Tirrell, held ODU up multiple times through three quarters and then did a great job transitioning the ball. Also, Amelia made a lot of nice saves in goal."

The two teams both traded goals back and forth through the first half of the first period. Moira Olexa and Mills scored two goals in the first five minutes for ODU, but Emily Cate Smith and Haley Moomau each answered to even the score.

The Monarchs took command with five straight goals over a 12-minute stretch that closed the first period and carried over into the second period to take a 7-2 lead. Cerretani and Libby both answered for Longwood and helped the Lancers go into the half down 8-4.

After halftime, the Monarchs locked down the Lancers on defense, and Mills and Mullenbach poured in six more goals to pull away.

"Unfortunately, we let the ball get away from us a few times on back-to-back possessions, which cost us scoring opportunities, especially in the fourth quarter," Jones said. "That allowed ODU to take control of, and ultimately win, the game."

ODU goalkeeper Jenna Peccia had 13 saves for the Monarchs.

The Lancers stay home for their next three matches, as they host VCU on Wednesday, March 2 at 3 p.m. before hosting Howard at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 6 and Saint Francis at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.
