HOW IT HAPPENED:
Campbell (7-6, 2-0 Big South) began the game attacking inside, scoring their first six points inside the paint.
Bailey Williams opened the scoring for Longwood (1-12, 0-2 Big South) on a quick dribble move inside for an easy layup. The Camels locked in defensively, only allowing five Lancer points for the majority of the quarter. However, an
Adriana Shipp-Davis steal and fast break score set the score at 14-7 in favor of Campbell after the first.
The Camels extended their lead to ten through the first two minutes of the second, but the Lancers came storming back. Longwood orchestrated a 12-2 run over the course of the next five minutes, leading 22-21 with under three minutes to go. Although Campbell would retake the lead in the final minutes of the second, a shifty crossover from
Chardonnay Hartley and subsequent floater set the score at 29-24 headed into the locker room.
The third quarter didn't produce much scoring for either side, as Campbell outscored Longwood 13-8 in the frame. The two teams traded buckets throughout the entire quarter until the final two minutes, where Campbell held Longwood scoreless and extended their lead to ten. The Camels then opened the fourth on an 8-0 run, and the Lancers chances of a comeback looked slim. However, Longwood just wouldn't go away, cutting the Campbell lead to eight after a 16-6 run to close the quarter. The Lancers fought to the very end, but ultimately came up short in today's game.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Pressure defense is a key staple of our defensive philosophy, and I thought we did a really good job of forcing turnovers and capitalizing on them," said head coach
Erika Lang-Montgomery on her team's 21 points off of turnovers.
"I was really proud of the effort and fight that [our players] gave," said Lang-Montgomery. "Campbell's lead could have easily ballooned and gotten a lot larger, but I thought that we competed and showed a lot of grit."
"The message that I told our team was that we work and definitely put in the effort," said Lang-Montgomery. "Now if we can be more disciplined…that's the area where we need to get better."
