Lancers Fall In Big South Premiere To High Point 79-50

Longwood Out-Rebounds High Point In Loss

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Longwood Lancers women's basketball team fell in its Big South conference opener on the road against the High Point Panthers by a score of 79-50. Although Longwood outrebounded High Point during the game, an offensive surge in the second and third quarters proved to be the difference for the Panthers.

Longwood Statistical Leaders

Points: Adriana Shipp-Davis (14)
Rebounds: Anne-Hamilton LeRoy (6)
Assists: Chardonnay Hartley (3)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood (1-11) set the tone on the glass to begin the game, taking advantage of two Adriana Shipp-Davis offensive rebounds and subsequent put-backs to lead early. The Lancers remained aggressive rebounding the ball throughout the frame, leading 12-6 in that category after one. However, High Point (3-8) concluded the first on an 8-2 run, giving them a 13-12 lead a fourth of the way through.

Brooke Anya checked into the game for the first time to start the second, immediately scoring inside to put Longwood back on top. The Panthers responded well, garnering a 20-3 run over the course of the next nine minutes of action. High Point rode a 64.3% shooting percentage in the second to build a 20-point lead at the conclusion of the half. Chardonnay Hartley connected on a buzzer-beating triple to end the quarter, putting the score at 38-21 in favor of High Point.

High Point built on its impressive second quarter in the third, shooting 50% from the field in the frame to continue their run. Three-point shooting made much of the difference for the Panthers, connecting on open looks to build upon their lead. Although the Lancers held their own on the glass throughout the game and on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, High Point's explosive second and third quarters propelled them to the victory.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We wanted to be the better rebounding team, we wanted to be aggressive, and we took advantage of that," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery on her team's rebounding. "I thought we were strong on the glass, got some offensive rebounds early, and that helped us keep the rebounding lead for the game."

"They did a great job of limiting our drives in the paint," said Lang-Montgomery on High Point's defense. "We've got to do a better job of taking care of the ball…it's the live-ball turnovers that hurt you."

"That's the good thing about the quick turnaround is that we don't have a long time to dwell on this," said Lang-Montgomery on the team's next matchup on Saturday. "Now the focus shifts immediately to getting ready for Campbell."
