FARMVILLE, Va. – New Jersey Institute of Technology's offense rattled off two huge innings to take the series finale against Longwood on Sunday afternoon in a hit-filled affair. The Highlanders (4-3) plated four runs in the first inning and eight in the sixth to take down the Lancers 17-5 as the two teams combined for 30 base hits.
Â
Highlander juniors Julio Marcano and Paul Franzoni delivered the big hits early and combined to drive in NJIT's first six runs. Marcano went 3-for-5 with a season-best three RBI to go with two runs scored, and Franzoni cranked his first homer of the season while going 2-for-3 with three RBI. The duo keyed an NJIT offense that had a season-best 19 hits with seven players having multi-hit games.
Â
Marcano's two-run triple and Franzoni's two-run double put NJIT up in the first inning, and Franzoni added a solo home run in the third to push the lead to 6-1.
Â
Longwood's offense racked double digit hits for a second straight game, but NJIT's pitching staff was able to limit the damage and prevent the Lancers (2-6) from posting a big inning. The Lancers had their 11 hits spread over seven innings and stranded 16 runners on base.
Â
Andrew Gorham gave Longwood its first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and also drew three walks in the game.
Nate Blakeney cut the lead to 6-2 with a sac fly to centerfield in the fourth inning.
Â
The floodgates opened for NJIT in the sixth as a six-hit, eight run broke the game open and pushed the lead to 14-2.
Â
For Longwood,
Cullan Wadsworth had his second multi-hit game of the season. The sophomore swatted a pair of doubles, drew two walks, drove in a run and scored twice.
Dillon Champagne added a pinch-hit, two-run single in the ninth inning, and
Drayven Kowalski also tied a career high with two hits.
Â
Parker O'Neil (1-0) earned the win for NJIT following two relief innings. He pitched the fourth and fifth innings and did not surrender a run on a walk and two hits while striking out one.
Â
Gage Williams (0-2) took the loss for Longwood as NJIT came out swinging. He surrendered four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out one in the top of the first inning.
