GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Day two of the Bubly Invitational was not as kind to Longwood as the first day of the Invitational. The Lancers and No. 8, the University of Florida opened the day with a rematch from the night before, with the Gators getting the best of the Lancers, 11-0. Game two of the day for Longwood saw Southeastern Louisiana use a four-run second inning, leading to a 6-1 victory over the Lancers.
Dominant pitching was the theme in both losses for Longwood (3-5) as the Lancers faced two pitchers in the circle who went the distance, tossing a complete game, and striking out eight Lancers apiece in the process. Longwood combined for six hits on the day with
Destiny Martinez leading the offense with two hits against Lions.
Longwood used three Lancers in the circle with
Arleigh Wood getting the start in game one, and
Sydney Backstrom starting game two, both Lancers received the loss in their starts, and
Angelina Sherba made an appearance in relief for Longwood in game one.
With the losses, Longwood falls to 3-5 on the season. The Lancers will now turn their attention for a 9:00 a.m. first pitch against North Dakota State University to conclude the Bulby Invitation.
Game One: Florida's Hightower Controls Lancers in Complete Game Shutout
No. 8 University of Florida's offense scored three runs to start the game, complemented by Elizabeth Hightower's complete-game shutout led the Gators to an 11-0 victory over the Lancers.
Arleigh Wood was in the circle for the Lancers to start the game and regrouped after the Gators (9-1) scored three in the first to retire the next six batters she faced in order. Florida's offense was able to strike again in the fourth to push the Gators to an 11-0 advantage over the Lancers.
Alexis Wayland singled in the third for the Lancers only hit against a dominant pitching performance from Elizabeth Hightower. Hightower fanned eight Lancers, allowing only one hit and one walk over her 5.0 innings of work.
Wood receives her second loss of the season for the Lancers falling to 1-2 on the year.
Game Two: Lions Pitching Leads Southeastern Louisiana over Lancers
Longwood's offense responded after being shutout in their previous contest with two-hit first inning against the Lions.
Lauren Taylor scored
Destiny Martinez with a sacrifice fly in the first to give Longwood their first lead of the day.
Unfortunately for the Lancers, their lead was short-lived as Southeastern (7-2) responded in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second. Southeastern behind the pitching of Comeaux would hold the Lancers scoreless for the final six innings, leading the Lions to victory over the Lancers, 6-1.

Sydney Jacobsen reached base three times in the loss, but Longwood was unable to find a way to score Jacobsen against Comeaux, who struck out eight Lancers over 7.0 innings of work.
Sydney Backstrom was in the circle for 6.0 innings for Longwood as the Lions scattered seven hits against Backstrom, resulting in six runs (three earned). Backstrom falls to 2-3 on the year.
