Tucker Named Honorable Mention, Garrido Tabbed to All-Academic Team

FARMVILLE, Va. – Two Lancers, shortstop Antwaun Tucker and catcher Carlos Garrido, received All-Big South postseason honors, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Tucker was named an All-Big South Honorable Mention, and Garrido was named to the academic team. The all-conference awards are firsts for both players, and the Lancers have placed a player on the postseason all-conference teams all seven seasons since joining the Big South.

A native of Chase City, Va., Tucker has been a pivotal part of the Lancer lineup for the past three seasons while also serving as the starting shortstop for the past two seasons.

In 2019, Tucker reached base with a .376 clip, a career high on-base percentage, despite battling a midseason injury, and he posted a team-best .297 average. The speedster tied for the team lead with 13 stolen bases but also hit for power by racking up 10 extra-base hits, including three home runs. He now has eight in his career. Tucker also pounded notched his first career four-hit game after returning from his injury, and he added two more four-hit games while compiling 12 multi-hit games in 37 starts.

Garrido, a Business Administration major finished 2019 with a 3.99 cumulative GPA to earn the nod on the Big South All-Academic team. The redshirt-junior was the male recipient of the Henry B. Willett Scholar-Athlete of the Year, given to the top male and female scholars of the Longwood student-athlete population. He was named to the President's List seven times in the past four seasons as well.

On the field, Garrido stayed healthy all season to deliver a career year for the Lancers. His .292 batting average, .389 slugging percentage 11 extra-base hits were all career highs, and he came through in clutch moments by driving in the tying or winning runs in five games. Garrido swatted his first career homer to drive in the game winning run against Albany and paced the team by tying a career high with 23 RBI. He started 42 games, with 37 coming behind the plate.

Garrido and Tucker are two of nine returning position players that amassed at least 100 at bats for the Lancers. Longwood will return 30 players in 2020.
