Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood opens up a nine-game road swing with a midweek test at George Mason. The two met earlier in the season, with George Mason taking a tight 4-3 game in Farmville.
  • The Lancers snapped a 10-game losing streak behind a doubleheader sweep of Charleston Southern over the weekend.
  • Longwood will play 11 games against seven in-state opponents in 2019 with four games in Farmville and seven away.
  • Jack Schnell had a monster weekend. The sophomore went 4-5 in the team's doubleheader win with four RBI and finished a home run short of the cycle. He hit .625 (5-8) in the series.
  •  Longwood's pitching staff and defense executed in the clutch by stranding 23 CSU base runners in the two wins.
  • Fifth-year head coach Ryan Mau is on win away from his 100th win as a head coach, all as the head coach at Longwood.
By The Numbers
  • Longwood has already hit two home runs in April and 18 this season after hitting 23 in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam and Jacob Mitchell each have hit a team-best four home runs. De'Andre Pitts, Jawan McAllister and Nate Blakeney all have two.
  • Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Mitchell had the team's first multi-homer game after knocking out two solo shots against Gardner-Webb on March 16 in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • The Lancers haven't lost a game in a doubleheader since losing twice to Army on Feb. 21.
  • Hunter Gilliam has been a revelation in the Longwood order and holds a .313 batting average. The freshman has started all 31 games for the Lancers and leads the team with 36 hits and 19 RBI while tying for the team lead with four homers and 18 runs scored. He also has amassed 12 multi-hit games and had his first three-hit game on Saturday, March 23.
  • Longwood's pitching staff sits second in the Big South with 8.86 strikeouts per nine innings and is third with 255 total strikeouts.
  • Starter Tyler Morgan is second in the Big South with 54 K's and third in strikeouts per nine (10.64). Nick Fuchs is sixth with 9.72 strikeouts per nine.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the school's D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.
  • John Gregory and Jon Peterson have been a pair of lefty stalwarts out of the bullpen for Longwood. Gregory has made a team-high 15 appearances while leading the bullpen with 28 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. Peterson has converted on all three save opportunities in 2019.
  • Gregory gutted through his longest outing of the season against Charleston Southern on April 6. The junior threw 4.1 innings and struck out a season-high six while surrendering two unearned runs on five hits and three walks to earn the win.
  • Jon Peterson saved back-to-back games in a doubleheader on April 6 against Charleston Southern. After firing through a two-inning save in a 3-2 win in game one that snapped a two-game losing streak, the senior left-hander came on with the bases loaded and one out in game two. He preserved the win by forcing a sacrifice fly before striking out the final batter to secure the team's series win over Charleston Southern.
  • Jack Schnell broke out with a huge performance against Charleston Southern on April 6. The sophomore went 4-5 at the plate for the day. In game two of the doubleheader, he either scored or drove in five of the team's seven runs (four RBI, one run scored) while finishing a home run short of the cycle.
  • Schnell hit .625 in the series (5-8) and hit safely in all three games.
Last Time Out
  • Charleston Southern jumped out to an early lead and ran away with it in the fifth inning to deny Longwood the sweep on Sunday. Despite the 16-3 loss, the Lancers took their second Big South series of 2019 after sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday.
Scouting George Mason
  • Longwood and George Mason meet for the second time this season after George Mason visited Farmville on February 26. The Patriots took out Longwood 4-3 in a tight midweek contest.
  • George Mason has lost six of its past seven with the only win being a 13-2 pasting of George Washington on Saturday, April 6. That win was the first conference win of the season for GMU, but the Patriots lost the series after dropping game one 16-7 and game three 8-5.
  • George Mason is hitting .256 as a team and has put up at least 10 hits in 11 games this season, including all three of the games against George Washington over the weekend.
  • Logan Driscoll has raked all season and has reached safely in six straight games. Driscoll holds a team-best .343 average to go with eight homers, eight doubles and 25 RBI, all team highs, while posting a 1.134 OPS. He has half of his team's 16 home runs. Tim Quinn, with three homers, is the only other player with more than one, and he is second on the team with 20 RBI while sporting a .274 batting average.
  • Out of the bullpen, Mason Posey, Stuart Barrett and Michael Yuille have a team-high 11 appearances. James Beasley has a team-best four saves in his 10 appearances and leads the pitching staff with a 3.31 ERA to go with 14 strikeouts in 16.1 innings. Jarod Lyons has the most strikeouts in relief with 20 K's in 13 innings spread across nine appearances while surrendering 13 runs on 13 hits and 10 walks.
