BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Longwood utilized a pair of late rallies en route to taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader with Gardner-Webb played at Brinkley Stadium.
Longwood scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to erase a 3-0 deficit in a 6-3 victory in game one of the day before a four-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Lancers to a 5-4 comeback win in the second game of the day.
"The cardiac kids are alive and well," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley. "Lately, we've played well in the last two or three innings when things look dire and to the credit of our players, they gave themselves an opportunity to win again today and we were able to come out on top.
With the pair of wins, Longwood (23-13, 10-1 Big South) extends its Big South win streak to nine consecutive games, as the Lancers have won 14 straight conference series dating back to the 2017 season. The wins against Gardner-Webb (24-17, 3-8 Big South) extends Longwood's win streak over the Runnin' Bulldogs to 22 straight games.
The game marks the fifth time in Longwood's last eight Big South contests that the Lancers have mounted a comeback effort when trailing in a game.
Jordan Clark added an insurance two-run home run in the first game of the day in a 3-for-4 performance, before lifting Longwood with her two-run double in the seventh inning to hand Longwood their first lead of game two. The Midlothian, Va., product led Longwood at the plate with a 4-for-8 performance, adding four RBI, three runs scored.
"Coaches always lean on seniors to come through because of their experience and understanding that things change quickly in games," Riley said. "You rely on them and today we really leaned on all of our juniors and seniors to get us back into the game."
Destiny Martinez finished the day with three hits while
Alexis Wayland and
Leah Powell added a pair of hits.
In the circle,
Arleigh Wood pitched three scoreless innings to lead Longwood pitching and earned the win in game one, while
Sydney Backstrom tossed a complete-game effort in game two.
Sydney Gay also made an appearance.
The two teams will return to Brinkley Stadium Sunday, April 7 for the final game of the three-game series, slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
Game 1: Longwood 6, Gardner-Webb 3
Clark went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a seventh inning home run to lead Longwood to a 6-3 comeback win in the first game of the series.
Longwood overcame a Brooke Perry three-run home run in the first inning, shutting down the Runnin' Bulldogs over the final six innings.
The three-hit game for Clark was her team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season, as she added two runs scored and two RBI to her performance. Batten delivered the 1-for-4 performance with a pair of RBI, igniting the Longwood offense with her double coming in the three-run sixth inning. Wayland also finished with her eighth multi-hit game of the season, recording three hits and a pair of doubles as she brought home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and scored a pair of runs.
Wood (6-0) picked up the win to remain unbeaten on the season, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three scoreless innings, giving up one hit and walking four. In her last eight appearances, Wood leads the Longwood pitching staff with her 2.93 ERA.
Gay got the start and earned a no decision, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out a pair in four innings.
Perry (14-9) went the distance in the circle for Gardner-Webb and took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits and five walks. She added eight strikeouts, throwing 150 pitches, 92 for strikes.
Kaylee Wacaster led Gardner-Webb at the plate, going 2-for-3.
Game 2: Longwood 5, Gardner-Webb 4
Longwood rallied with four runs in the seventh inning capped by Clark's go-ahead double down the left field line, as the Lancers came from behind to earn a 5-4 win over Gardner-Webb to clinch the series.
Clark went 1-for-2 in the game and came through with a clutch one out, two RBI double in an inning that Gardner-Webb took a 3-1 lead. She later came around to score on a wild pitch, as she was responsible for three of Longwood's four runs in the inning.
Powell and Martinez each notched a two-hit performance, as the Lancers scored five runs on eight hits and took advantage of three Gardner-Webb errors.
That seventh inning rally supported a complete-game effort from Backstrom (10-7), who gave up four runs on four hits and three walks while adding eight strikeouts in a performance that saw her throw 122 pitches, 75 for strikes.
Reah Barger (5-3) took the loss for Gardner-Webb, tossing a complete game and giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits and one walk. She struck out one batter in the game.
Longwood was able to overcome two-hit performances from Andria Booth, Autumn Owen, Kaylee Waycaster and Weslyn Almund.
