Duke Takes Pair Over Longwood in Midweek Twin Bill

Duke Rallied to Take Game One 6-3, Before Taking Nightcap, 4-1

DURHAM, N.C. – Longwood's season-long seven game win streak came to an end, as Duke earned a doubleheader sweep over the Lancers Wednesday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.

Longwood took an early 3-0 lead in game one before a Duke (19-19) rally helped the Blue Devils to a 6-3 win, before a combined three-hitter from Duke pitchers Peyton St. George and Amelia Wiercioch led Duke to a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

"We felt that we had opportunities in both games today. In the first game, I didn't feel like we played with the spirit a team needs when they're really competitive," said Longwood head coach Kathy Riley. "We had the 3-0 lead and we just didn't shut them down the way we needed to."

With the losses, Longwood (21-13) sees its season-high seven game win streak come to a close, as it marks the fifth time this season that the Lancers have dropped back-to-back games.

Alexis Wayland led the Lancers at the plate, recording a hit in each game highlighted by her fifth home run of the season in game two.

Longwood steps back into conference play with a three-game weekend series at Gardner-Webb, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday, April 6 beginning at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Duke 6, Longwood 3

Duke's Peyton St. George came out of the bullpen to throw 5.1 scoreless innings of two-hit ball to lead the Blue Devils to a 6-3 comeback win over Longwood in the first game of the day.

St. George (5-4) retired 16 of the 19 batters she faced, working around two hits and a walk, while adding nine strikeouts on 75 pitches, 49 for strikes.
The nine strikeouts from St. George marked a season-high for the sophomore, as she worked two 1-2-3 innings, as she relieved Brianna Butler in the circle after Butler yielded three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.

The third home run of the season from Deja Davis helped the Blue Devils overcome a 3-0 deficit, as it was part of a 2-for-4 day with the plate with three RBI, one run scored. Davis combined with Raine Wilson for four of Duke's six hits, as Wilson finished 2-for-2 with a run scored.

At the plate, Longwood scattered five hits from five different players, as Jessica Smith and Leah Powell each added a hit and RBI to pace the offense, while Jordan Clark added the only extra base hit with a double off the wall to left center. Alexis Wayland and Kaylynn 'Bug' Batten also added a hit.

In the circle, Sydney Backstrom (9-7) went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits and four walks while throwing 90 pitches, 50 for strikes and topping out at 70 miles per hour.

A pair of Duke runs in the fourth inning and a combined three-hitter led the Blue Devils to a 4-1 win in the second game of the afternoon.
