Strong First Half Not Enough for Lancers

Ciarah Bennett Leads Lancers With 15 Points, Fourth Straight Game in Double Figures in 69-48 Loss

NORFOLK, Va. – Four double figure scorers and a .518 shooting performance led Old Dominion past the Longwood women's basketball team 69-48 Monday night inside the Ted Constant Center.

In a makeup of Nov. 29's postponement due to a campus security threat on the Old Dominion campus, the Monarchs (19-9, 9-6 C-USA) extended a four-point lead after three quarters with a fourth quarter that saw Old Dominion .667 (10-of-15) from the floor.

"One of the things that we've focused on all season is toughness and execution of the game plan," said first-year Longwood head coach Rebecca Tillett. "I thought we did a good job for three and a half quarters at the highest level for the entire season. The most difficult part for us is the last five minutes where I didn't think we had enough answer back in that stretch."

Dejah Carter scored a game-high 17 points while Amari Young added 11 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double performance. Mariah Adams and Aziah Hudson each scored 10 points, as the Monarchs have won their most games since the 2014-15 season.

The Monarchs used a 50-23 advantage in the paint to win its second straight game over a Longwood (3-25, 2-15 Big South) team that dropped its sixth straight game.

In the final stretch of her senior season, senior Ciarah Bennett registered her fourth consecutive games in double figures, as she matched her career-high with four three-pointers en route to a 15-point performance that saw her make 4-of-5 from three-point range. Bennett continues a late-season surge in which she's averaged 14.8 points per game, including 15-plus in each of her last two contests.

"CeCe takes coaching very well," Tillett said. "She also has the realization that she's nearing the end of her career and there is a freedom in that. The next time she's playing, it's a very different scenario than the college basketball arena."

Stephanie Guihon joined Bennett in double figures with 10 points, three rebounds while Akila Smith finished with eight points on 4-of-5 from the field.

Longwood travels to Charleston Southern for its regular season finale Saturday, March 9. That game is set for a 3 p.m. opening tip inside the Buc Dome.
