Strong Second Half Paces Bucs Past Lancers

Ciarah Bennett, Dayna Rouse Pace Lancers in Scoring in 79-67 Loss

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Four double figure scorers and a .548 shooting clip in the second fueled Charleston Southern past the Longwood women's basketball team 79-67 Saturday afternoon inside the Buc Dome.

On their senior day, the Buccaneer senior quartet of Ke'Asia Jackson, Shelby Wilbanks, Weknyne Dumorne and Breannah Bretches combined to score 55 of Charleston Southern's 79 points. Jackson and Wilbanks led the way with 15 points apiece, while Bretches scored 13 points and Dumorne added 12 on 4-of-6 shooting.

Ending the regular season 7-3 over its final 10 games, Charleston Southern (12-17, 9-9 Big South) wins its second straight to close out the regular season while overcoming a team-high and the 20th game of the season in double figures from Longwood's Dayna Rouse, who scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting along with the fifth straight game in double figures from Longwood's Ciarah Bennett, who finished with 11 points, four assists.

"This time of year, we have to play with a certain type of toughness," said Longwood first-year head coach Rebecca Tillett. "We were really encouraged in our last game against Old Dominion with the toughness we played with for three quarters. There were times that we showed that tonight."

Longwood (3-26, 2-16 Big South) ends the regular season with seven straight losses and enters next week's Big South Tournament as the No 11 overall seed.

The Lancers trimmed a 15-point deficit to two points in the early portion of the third quarter fueled by a 7-0 run to end the first half and scoring 10 of the first 15 points in the second half. The Buccaneers responded by hitting six of its last six shots from the floor to extend its lead to 13 points heading into the fourth quarter.

Scoring in double figures for the 20th time in a breakout season that has seen her score 15-plus points in 13 games, Rouse finished the regular season as the Big South's most efficient player with a conference-best .565 shooting percentage. She ends the regular season on pace to finish as Longwood's top player in the program's Division I era and third in program history, behind Kirsten Hillgaard (.578, 1993-94) and Mary Barron (.571, 1996-97).

"I think Dayna is trying to do everything she can to help our team," Tillett said. "She's playing good defense, she's been efficient for us all season. She's really starting to talk to the team a little more as a leader."

Bennett scored in double figures for the fifth straight game to wrap-up the regular season, as the 5-5 guard has averaged 14.0 points per game over that stretch. With the performance, Bennett has .397 from the floor and has hit .577 of her shots from beyond the arc.

"I thought CeCe had a good stat line," Tillett said. "I did challenge her after the game to be more connected to her teammates. If people are struggling, she should use some of her positive energy to help our team."

With the conclusion of the regular season, Longwood will be the 11-seed in next week's Big South Tournament where a second matchup with sixth-seeded Campbell awaits. The opening tip is set for 7 p.m. inside Gore Arena in Buies Creek, N.C.
