FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing fewer than 24 hours after a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Big South frontrunner Campbell Friday, Longwood righted the ship with a 7-0 sweep of neighboring Hampden-Sydney Saturday morning at the Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts.
Â
Longwood (9-5) won all nine bouts and did not drop a set in singles play to inch closer to securing the program's third consecutive double-digit win season. That dominance came from throughout the lineup, including matching 6-0, 6-0 shutout wins at singles Nos. 4-6.
Â
In total, Longwood dropped just 11 sets in singles play en route to their fifth shutout win of the season.
Â
That performance came on not even a full day's rest for the Lancers, who bounced back from Friday's narrow loss to the reigning Big South champion Fighting Camels to take the court for an early 9 a.m. first serve against the Tigers (3-8). Longwood took charge from the start, sweeping doubles play behind a 6-2 win at No. 1 from
Amadeo Blasco and
Raisei Sakai, a 6-3 win at No. 2 from
Guilherme Sergio and
Guillermo Cagigas, and a 6-1 victory at No. 3 from
Julian Farthing and
Rosen Naydenov.
Â
All six of those Lancers stayed on for singles play, and all six came away with wins as Longwood swept singles play for the fifth time this season.
Â
Blasco led the charge with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hampden-Sydney No. 1 Matthew Moody, improving to 19-3 this season and securing his 69th career win in the process. The win increased his hold on Longwood's all-time singles winning percentage record at .812 (69-16) and to within 20 victories of breaking the school's all-time singles win record of 88 set by
Nobu Tanaka.
Â
Senior
Julian Farthing also inched closer to Tanaka's record Saturday, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Hampden-Sydney's Clark Cummings. That win was the 72nd of Farthing's career, which ranks second on that all-time list.
Â
Sakai and Naydenov joined Farthing with 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 6, while Sergio and Cagigas handled their matchups as well. Sergio pulled out a 6-0, 6-2 win over Michael Moody at No. 2 to extend his team-leading win streak to 11 straight, while the freshman Cagigas picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over William Driskill to improve to 10-4 in the first spring of his collegiate career.
Â
The win comes as part of a three-match weekend for the Lancers, who will head to Howard Sunday.
