Longwood Rally Falls Short at Radford, 4-3

Jamie Breunig Extends Singles Win Streak to Seven Straight

RADFORD, Va. – Radford's Jeanine Acietro earned the match-clinching point, as Longwood's rally fell short 4-3 to Big South and Commonwealth rival Radford Wednesday afternoon at the Radford University Tennis Complex.

Radford (8-5, 1-0 Big South), controlled doubles play on its home court and swept all three matches. The Longwood (8-4, 0-2 Big South) Anika Tylek and Marija Venta dropped a 6-2 decision to Drousile Dzeubou and Tyler Blalock on court one before the Highlander pair of Anatasia Belyaeva and Jeanine Acierto clinched the doubles point on court three with a 6-3 win over Longwood's Yuila Almiron and Jamie Breunig 6-3.

Longwood's pair of Emma Nurgazieva and Crystal Nzewi trailed in their match on court two against Malin Falk and Katey Fruehauf before it was left unfinished.

In singles, Breunig extended her win streak to seven straight matches and 12th singles victory of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Drousile Dzeubou while Almiron earned a win in a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 3 position over Malin Falk 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4). The win for Almiron is her 12th of the season, as she remains unbeaten at the third spot in the lineup.

"Overall I think we are getting closer to start earning some conference wins. If we can all play at the same level for a longer period of times," director of tennis Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez said, "We do struggle to keep the momentum going and opportunities might not come back that easy. Emotions in tennis can lead to bad choices and we need to do a better job of keeping our cool in important moments."

Nurgazieva picked up the final singles win of the day for Longwood at the No.4 singles spot over Katey Fruehauf, 6-0, 7-5, to move to 10-3 overall.

At No. 6 singles, Nzwei dropped her match to Marielle Leahy 6-2, 6-0, while Venta fought hard but was defeated at the top of the lineup by Belyaeva, 6-2, 6-1.

Radford clinched the win on court five, as Tylek dropped the first set by a 6-4 score before falling in a tiebreak in the second set in a 6-4, 7-6 (4) loss to Acierto.

Up next, the Longwood women will welcome Campbell to Lancer Courts, as part of a doubleheader with the men's tennis team.
