WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Coming off a tough weekend against two strong opponents with another looming, Longwood needed a big performance on Tuesday night.
Katie Wyman and the Lancers delivered.
On a night where the Lancers were outshot 22-5, Wyman mustered a masterful performance to keep the Tribe out of the net as Longwood pulled out a 1-0 win over William & Mary Tuesday evening.
Sophia Loscher got the Lancers (5-4, 1-0 MAC) on the board in the second quarter with a goal, and Wyman made 12 saves to ensure Longwood would walk away with the victory.
"William & Mary is a very talented group and play the ball very well," said head coach
Iain Byers. "So to come away with a win, I was very proud of this group and how they defended and how hard they worked—it has been a strength of ours all year. We are very happy with what we did today and the way we performed, so it is a really good result for us. We are very proud of the way we practiced—it is all about the preparation, so we are looking forward to another good couple of days of practice before we are off to Ohio."
Today's performance marked the fifth shutout of the season for Wyman. Her twelve saves were the most in a win for her this season, as she was able to shut down an offense that scored three goals in each of their previous two games as she continues an her excellent season. Contributing to her performance was strong defensive play from her backline of
Luna Lopez,
Rio Weber, and
Clara Meschini.
"Overall, I think we did really awesome as a team," said Wyman, who has now amassed 14 shutouts in her standout career as a Lancer. "This was our best game as a team this season, but we still have a lot of things to improve on. We really needed this win going into the weekend with our second conference game of the season coming up against Ohio, who is a really tough team to beat."
Sophomore
Sophia Loscher's second quarter goal for the Lancers was the difference in the match for Longwood. After
Karly Harwood's initial shot attempt was saved, Loscher was the first player to the rebound. She took one dribble in the arc before she ripped a shot by Tribe goalkeeper Kimi Jones for the only goal of the match. The goal tied her for the team lead with four goals on the season, as she continues to produce offensively for the Lancers.
The Tribe attempted seven shots in the fourth quarter, including four in the final two minutes, but Wyman was up to the task, making four saves in the final quarter to help Longwood cling to a 1-0 lead. Ashley Drum led William & Mary (3-5) with four total shots in the game.
Longwood will look to improve to 2-0 in conference play when they head to Athens, Ohio on Saturday to take on Ohio. The game is set to start at 12 p.m.
