Lancers Rally Late, but Fall to Ohio

Longwood tied the game in the fourth, but lost to Ohio 2-1

ATHENS, Ohio – In a conference game featuring the MAC's best defense in Longwood and the MAC's best offense in Ohio, something had to give.

Trailing 1-0 entering the fourth quarter, Longwood was able to get the equalizer they needed but they could not keep Ohio out of the net late as the Lancers dropped a 2-1 decision Saturday afternoon. Karly Harwood got Longwood (5-5, 1-1 MAC) on the board with the game tying goal, but the Bobcats were able to regain the lead late in quarter as Leah Warren netted the game winner off the a penalty corner as Ohio (5-3, 2-1 MAC) secured the victory.

"We are disappointed to have had one of our worst performances in such a pivotal game," said head coach Iain Byers. "It is unfortunate, but the way that we played was just not up to our normal standards that we set for ourselves. I think the team is upset, but we will pull ourselves together, move on, and progress for the next game."

Katie Wyman, who entered the game leading the NCAA in save percentage with a .875 clip, was sharp again on Saturday, notching seven saves on nine shots on goal. Overall, Ohio totaled 13 shots to Longwood's eight.

Offensively, Olivia Wawrzyniak and Charlotte Wilm each tallied three shots for the Lancers, as Briana Greene added one of her own to go along with Harwood's goal. Freshman Camila Duarte picked up her first collegiate point in the match, notching an assist.

Ohio's Karynne Baker opened the scoring in the first quarter on a penalty corner to make the score 1-0, where it would stay until the fourth quarter.

Early in the final frame, Duarte was able to play a perfect pass through the Bobcat defense across the arc to Harwood, who made no mistake as she buried it for the game tying goal. However, after Ohio was awarded a penalty corner late in the game, Leah Warren of Ohio squeezed a shot just inside the post and past Wyman to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead they would not surrender.

The Lancers continue conference play next weekend, as Longwood returns to Farmville to host Appalachian state on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 12 p.m.
