FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood is undefeated at home no more.
Â
Led by 25 points from Phlandrous Fleming Jr. and a 22-point double-double from Christian Keeling, Charleston Southern (7-9, 1-2 Big South) snapped the Lancers' seven-game home win streak with a 101-91 win Saturday afternoon in Willett Hall, putting an end to the best home start by a Longwood team since the 1993-94 Lancers went a perfect 13-0.
Â
The Bucs' two 20-point scorers sparked an overwhelming offensive effort that saw Charleston Southern put up triple digits against a Longwood (11-7, 1-2 Big South) team that entered the game as the Big South's top-rated defensive squad, leading the league in both opponent scoring and opponent field goal percentage.
Â
"This was probably the first game that I felt like we got out-toughed," said Longwood first-year head coach
Griff Aldrich. "It was the first game I felt like we didn't have competitive fire. I wasn't sure what I was looking at – we got down by about eight, and it was like the balloon got deflated. I'm sitting there thinking, that's not our team. All we have to do is make a couple stops, and we're ok. But it was almost like that toughness and fight got zapped."
Â
The loss came less than 48 hours after the Lancers gutted out a 67-62 win against Big South foe UNC Asheville Thursday in Willett Hall, during which they secured a one-point lead by forcing stops on four of UNC Asheville's final five possessions.
Â
However, Saturday it was Charleston Southern that won in crunch time, turning a four-point lead with seven minutes to play into double digits by the five-minute mark. The Buccaneers made five consecutive field goals during that span, including one of the three three-pointers by Keeling and four unanswered points by Fleming.
Â
The Bucs dissected Longwood at every level, shooting .516 (33-of-64) from the field and .452 (14-of-31) from three-point range, and outscored Longwood 28-26 in the paint and 14-2 on second-chance opportunities. Six Charleston Southern players scored in double figures, led by Fleming and Keeling's 20-point game, and 19 from Travis McConico, who led that second-half charge with 16 points after halftime.
Â
"I didn't think our effort was great, and our fight was not what it needed to be," Aldrich said. "Throughout the game, they dictated to us more than we dictated to them. Credit them on shooting the basketball – they shot extremely well. They made a bunch of open threes, but they also made some contested threes. That's a team's that's shooting 31 percent from three, and they shot 45 percent today. So credit them for really knocking down shots today, but at the same time, I thought we didn't compete at the level we needed to compete."
Â
That effort overshadowed a hot-shooting effort by the Lancers, who shot .500 (28-of-56) from the field and .500 (14-of-28) from three-point range and got 21 points from redshirt senior
Isaiah Walton. Walton added a season-high six assists and scored his 1,000th career point in the loss, becoming only the 22nd player in school history, and seventh in the 15-year Division I era, to reach that benchmark.
Â
However, Walton's sixth 20-point game of the season was not enough to overcome the Bucs, who became only the third team to top 80 points against Longwood this season and only the second to surpass 90. The Buccaneers set Longwood opponent highs in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, made field goals and made three-point field goals.
Â
Longwood entered halftime with a two-point lead, but Charleston Southern came out of the break on a 16-5 run to take the lead for good. Longwood trimmed the deficit to within one point on
Jordan Cintron's steal and fastbreak dunk with 13:03 to play, but the Buccaneers never let the Lancers score more than four unanswered points the rest of the way. Â
Â
"We're too inconsistent as a team, and that's a similar problem for a lot of programs throughout the country, but you want to beat teams you should beat," Aldrich said. "Charleston Southern is a good program, and they were picked fifth in the conference – but for us to lose at home, that's a game you should win. To lose it because guys didn't execute, that's disappointing."
Â
Along with Walton's 21,
Shabooty Phillips added 16 points and six assists, while
Spencer Franklin score da season-high 12 points while hitting 8-of-9 free throws. Sean Flood added nine points off the bench, and
Juan Munoz scored eight with a pair of three-pointers.
Â
"Credit our guys, because we've played 18 games and it's the first time I felt like the competitive fight wasn't there, particularly in the second half," Aldrich said. "That's something we have to address, and we have to make sure we continue to play at a high level in that regard. The truth is, playing hard and playing tough, that's a skillset. It's something certainly we want to pride ourselves, but I'm not sure we saw that tonight, particularly in the second half."
Â
Longwood will now have four days to prepare for their next Big South matchup, a road showdown at Winthrop on Wednesday, Jan. 16. That will be the first of back-to-back games in South Carolina for the Lancers, who follow with a trip to Presbyterian on Jan. 19.
