FARMVILLE, Va. – James Madison continued its dominant run through its 2018 schedule, earning its 18th win of the season in a 7-0 takedown of Longwood Thursday afternoon at Lancer Courts.
Â
The Dukes (18-3) pulled out two doubles wins to take the first point of the game and then rattled off five straight-sets wins in singles play en route to the sweep victory.
Â
The lone winners for Longwood (8-9) were
Yulia Almiron and
Jamie Breunig, who teamed up in doubles play to knock off the James Madison pair of Kimmy Herrock and Jona Roka 6-4 at the No. 2 slot. That win was the latest for what has become Longwood's winningest doubles pair down the stretch, as the duo has won three of their five matches since teaming up on March 31.
Â
However, James Madison countered Almiron and Breunig's win with doubles victories at Nos. 1 and 3 to secure the doubles point and stake a 1-0 lead.
Â
From there, James Madison ace Elizabeth Norman set the tone for singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Almiron at No. 1. Dukes No. 3 Jona Roka carried that momentum with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Breunig at No. 3 to extend the lead to 6-1, 6-4, and Anna Makarova clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Lancer sophomore
Marija Venta.
Â
Longwood freshman standout and 2018 wins leader
Tanja Skalda flirted with her 11th win of the season but fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to James Madison's Diane Flament at No. 5. The loss dropped Skalda to 10-5 on the season and marked only her second loss in her past seven singles bouts.
Â
The Lancers will have an opportunity to bounce back from Thursday's loss in less than 48 hours when they host Gardner-Webb in their final Big South matchup of the year. First serve for that showdown will take place at 11 a.m. on the Lancer Courts and will be one of Longwood's two matches that weekend, following with Sunday's regular-season finale against Howard.
