FARMVILLE, Va. – Just 24 hours after scoring four goals in a conference game, the Longwood attack blitzed Georgetown to the tune of four more in a 4-1 nonconference clash from Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field Sunday afternoon.

The four-goal performance is the third such outburst in as many games as the Lancers have outscored opponents 12-1 during their current homestand.

"We stepped up our level today," said 10th-year head coach Iain Byers. "I feel like this was one of our best performances. I told the team they've raised the bar one more level, and I love the fact that they've done that. I'll raise the bar with them and hold them to that higher standard."

Junior forward Leonie Verstraete, who scored two goals in the win Saturday, got the Longwood (8-1, 1-0 MAC) attack on the board with two more in the opening 18 minutes of the contest for her team-leading seventh and eighth tallies of the season.

Verstraete's second mark of the afternoon was also her fifth game-winning goal and second in as many days. Those five game-winning netters are the best in the Mid-American Conference.

"It's fun. It's our job to score – it's just the same as the defenders getting the ball out of the circle. It's our job to get them in" Verstraete said of the offensive explosion these past four contests, which has the Lancers outscoring opponents by a 14-2 margin.

Georgetown (5-5) freshman midfielder Nell Van Schaack poked in a loose ball on a second half penalty corner to cut into Longwood's 3-0 lead, but it didn't slow down the Lancers' momentum in the end.

Joining Verstraete in the scoring party was senior Edel Nyland, who added two goals to finish off the scoring barrage Sunday afternoon. The two goals are Nyland's sixth and seventh in her five appearances this season, good for second behind Verstraete's eight.

"It's coming from a good, stable base unit where we know we can defend well and create good pressure but also have good quality possession coming out of the back. It's great that they're scoring goals and it gives them the freedom into going and getting good attacking opportunities," Byers said. "The fun is there because the stable base unit is there and everyone's putting a shift in."

Junior goalkeeper and recent Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Katie Wyman collected a season-best seven saves against a season-high 15 shots faced from the Hoyas. Wyman only allowed one goal on the day on a deflection from a penalty corner, as she has stood tall in net as the Lancers have outscored opponents 14-2 across their second four-game win streak of the season.

"It's a lot of fun. In the past few seasons we've struggled in getting these types of win streaks so it's just really exciting to see us improve each and every game along with the score too," said senior midfielder/defender Kate Colley on the Lancers' second four-game win streak of the season. "It's not just our outlet and press, we're scoring more and more too."

Wyman's seven saves bested a six-save performance against VCU earlier this month as she sits among the top of the conference in goals allowed (7), goals allowed average (0.98) and shutouts (4). Thanks to Wyman's stellar play in net, the Lancer offense has created a 2.51 scoring margin, by far the best in the MAC.

Despite having seven fewer penalty corners in Sunday's contest, Longwood outshot the Hoyas 18-15 including 11 shots on goal to nine.

"We did a really good job of moving Georgetown so Lili (Lil-Sophie Achterwinter) was able to hit the ball all the way down to the forwards and then they were able to take it and shoot and score. It was pretty effective," Colley said

Verstraete added, "We don't talk that much about being 8-1, we're just focused on playing well every game. I think the confidence level we have right now is good and if we keep practicing hard we can maintain this level of play."

Longwood finishes their four-game homestand as MAC foe Appalachian State comes to town in their first-ever Mid-American clash with the Mountaineers. The Lancers follow that with a trip to No. 22 nationally-ranked American on Sunday in their second of two back-to-back weekends.

"The back-to-backs are tough, but they prepare us for the (MAC) tournament," Byers said.
