ELON, N.C. – Sophomore
Marija Venta took a three-set match Saturday morning to keep her singles chances alive at the Elon Fall Invitational. Venta took advantage of that opportunity Sunday with another three-set victory, this one to take the back draw of Flight A Singles from Maria Zacraias of Apalachian State.
After battling for a full-set victory Saturday morning in the semifinals of the back draw, Venta overcame a one-set deficit with back-to-back wins to complete the comeback and down Zacarias by a 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 score.
Venta's 2-1 record in singles play helped carry the flag for the Lancers over the three-day season-opening tournament as fellow sophomore co-ace
Jamie Breunig wrapped up her weekend with a 2-1 mark, taking Sunday's consolation match from Coastal Carolina's Jesse Mount in similar fashion as Venta's Sunday win.
Both Breunig and Venta showed the fight and grit that second-year head coach
Maria Lopez is looking to instill in her young, freshman-laden roster with the full-set comeback victories as Breunig completed her comeback in a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 manner, for a 2-1 singles record on the young season.
The duo of Breunig and Venta also picked up a dominant 8-3 doubles win to take the back draw of Flight C doubles from Elon's tandem of Maria Paraja/Mia Wallace their combined third victory on Sunday.
The veteran sophomore pair finished their weekend with a 1-1 record in doubles play after a bye in the back draw of Saturday semifinals.
Breunig, Venta and the young Lancers hit the court again this upcoming weekend in the Queens Fall Invitational, a three-day tournament beginning Friday morning.
