Longwood's 8-Game Home Win Streak Finally Comes to an End

Oppotunistic Towson Finds a Game-Winner to Hand Lancers First Home Loss Since 2016

FARMVILLE, Va. – All good things come to an end.

Thursday night at the Longwood Athletics Complex, it was the Lancer women's soccer team's nearly year-long home win streak that met its conclusion, as Towson midfielder Sarah Quick scored in the 66th minute to send the visiting Tigers (2-0-1) to a 1-0 victory over the home-team Lancers.

Longwood (1-1-0) entered the matchup on an eight-game home win streak, which began on Sept. 11, 2016, and continued with the 1-0 season-opening win over Howard Sunday. But the Tigers ended that tear with one pinpoint pass from senior Maddie Bove, who dissected the backline of Longwood's stingy defense to find a cutting Quick, who beat Longwood's All-Big South honorable mention goalkeeper Maria Kirby one-on-one to send in the game-winner.

The goal also snapped a home shutout streak that stretched six games back to Sept. 18, 2016, during which Longwood had outscored their home opponents 12-0.

12775"We feel really good about the tempo we established and the soccer we played in the first half," said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer, who guided the Lancers to a 7-2 home record and a perfect 5-0 home conference record last season.

"But Towson did a good job stalling our momentum early in the second half, and ultimately they had a goal to show for it. We created more than enough chances to win the game against a very good team, but we didn't capitalize and the result got away from us. It's a cruel but valuable soccer lesson that will help us grow as a team."

Quick's goal came on her lone shot of the night and one of only four shots Towson managed against Longwood's defense. That one opportunity was all the Tigers needed, however, and used it to overcome a Longwood attack that unleashed 17 shots, seven of which were on goal.

12772Towson goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao played a key role in the Tigers' defensive stand, nabbing seven saves, several of which came in traffic in front of the net. All seven of those came in the second half, including five in the game's final 15 minutes.

Longwood will have three days to bounce back before their first road game of the season when they head to Huntington, W.Va., to take on Marshall Sunday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. That game precedes another homestand, which an Aug. 31 showdown against American and a Sept. 2 matchup against former Big South foe VMI. Both of those home games will air live on the Big South Network.
