CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Longwood field hockey offense came alive Sunday afternoon as they scored double-digit goals to take down Queens 10-0 behind multi-goal performances from
Briana Greene,
Olivia Wawrzyniak and
Leonie Verstraete.
Sunday's exhibition was the first matchup between the Lancers and Royals, and was the final preseason tune up before Friday's season-opening bout with Villanova.
"It was a good game, definitely an improved performance," said 10th-year head coach
Iain Byers. "We moved the ball around very well at times."
After firing just seven shots all last season as a freshman,
Briana Greene followed her two-goal performance Saturday with her first career hat trick Sunday afternoon to help lead the Lancer attack.
Joining Greene with multi-goal performances were Leonie Verstaete, who scored a pair of goals, and fellow sophomore Olivia Wawryzniak, who tallied two. Verstraete, who finished second on the team with 14 goals and first with seven assists in 2016, dished out a team-high two assists Sunday afternoon along with
Maddie Kendrick's two-assist performance.
Seniors
Abbey Ripley and
Brenna Kinzel got in the scoring column with their first goals of the preseason, while redshirt-sophomore midfielder
Clara Meschini tallied her first goal. Kinzel also assisted on a goal and
Cameryn McLaurine became the first Lancer freshman to tally a point with her lone assist.
Sunday's exhibition concluded the preseason for Longwood, who finished the backend of a two-games-in-two-days slate against Richmond and Queens.
"There are still a few things that we need to work on," Byers said. "There's still some improvement to be made, but we did show some progress. We're happy with how the preseason ended and we're looking forward to the rest of the season."
The Lancers will have four days before their season and home-opening contest Aug. 25 versus Big East foe Villanova at 4 p.m. from Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
