FARMVILLE, Va. – Rising senior
Nick Contini of the Longwood men's golf team was one of 260 Division I athletes named among the 2017 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, as announced Wednesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
Â
It marks the second straight season that a Longwood golfer received the prestigious accolade, as
Clayton Forren was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar in 2016. Contini becomes one of five players in Longwood's Division I era to be honored. Contini is one of four golfers across the Big South to be honored and one of six players from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Â
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. In addition, a recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Â
The honor for Contini comes on the heels of Longwood being named to the GCAA All-Academic Team for the ninth consecutive season – all nine seasons since the GCAA began naming All-Academic Teams in 2009.
Â
A product of Granville, Ohio, Contini enjoyed a breakout junior campaign that saw him post a stroke average of 73.42 in 31 rounds. Contini carded the low round of the year for the Lancers with a seven-under 65 at the Cleveland State Invitational – a round that matched the lowest of the season for an individual within the Big South. In addition, the 5-9, 165 pound senior captured his first career victory, as part of a season that saw him collect a win and three top-five finishes.
Â
Contini is one of seven returning letterwinners for a Longwood squad that will see all five players from its 2016-17 lineup for the 2017-18 season. In addition, the squad will welcome the additions of
Colin Caporal and
Brett Loy. The Lancers make their fall debut Sept. 12-13 at the Marshall/Joe Feaganes Invitational.
