BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Playing in his final game for the blue and white, senior third baseman Brandon
Harvell came through in the clutch with a game-winning RBI triple in the 10th inning to lead the Lancers in a 7-5 season-concluding win at Campbell Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Fellow senior
Devin Gould (3-4) picked up the win as he worked 1.2 innings, including a perfect bottom of the
10th to put an end to his Longwood career.
Harvell's heroics highlighted a 4-for-5 day in which he scored two runs, his second run the final tally of the game for Longwood (19-34, 7-17). The senior tied for his career high in hits in the win and finishes with the most career games played, 210, and starts, 203, in school history. Harvell was the lone Lancer to start every game for Longwood this season.
With Thursday's loss to Campbell (20-25, 10-14 Big South), the Lancers are eliminated from the postseason and Saturday's win concludes the 2017 season.
Junior
right-hander Zach
Potojecki took the hill to start the season finale for the Lancers, tossing 4.0 innings of four-hit, four-run ball while striking out three. Only one of the four runs
Potojecki surrendered were earned.
Potojecki finishes his junior campaign with 82 strikeouts, second in the Big South behind senior starter
Cody Wager, who struck out 91 batters, leading Longwood to a school-record 511 strikeouts as a staff, the first 500-strikeout season in school history.
Sophomore
righty Cody
Boydstun came on in relief of
Potojecki, mowing down Campbell hitters and finishing with eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Cole
Hallum (0-2), who began the day as the DH for Campbell, took the loss allowing two runs, both earned, in just one inning of work.
Hallum also ended the day 0-for-4 with a walk at the plate.
Michael Osinski joined Harvell as the lone Lancers with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and one RBI.
Senior infielder
Alex Lewis was 1-for-4 with an RBI in his final collegiate game. Lewis finishes his career with a .281 batting average and 205 career hits with 101 career RBI.
Longwood's season comes to an end after Sunday's win, while the careers of
James Barry,
Harvell, Lewis, Gould, Wager, Tyler
Wirsu and
Luke Simpson come to a close on a high note.
