CLINTON, S.C. – The Longwood women's lacrosse team rolled to a 23-1 victory Thursday afternoon over Presbyterian behind four career performances and a season-best 15-goal first half outburst, tying a season-best margin of victory and snapping a four-game skid.
Sophomore sensation
Stephanie Roberts only needed 30 minutes to tally a career-best six goals on just six shots, her first perfect shooting contest of the season. Roberts' six-goal day is her ninth multi-goal performance of 2017, and pushes her total mark to 37 and tied T-6th in the Big South Conference. She also closed the game on a personal 5-0 run over a nine minute stretch, ending with her sixth goal at the 7:28 mark.
Roberts led a Longwood (6-10, 2-4 Big South) squad that dominated Presbyterian (2-13, 1-5 Big South) from the first whistle, controlling almost every statistical category on the afternoon including shots (36-11), draw controls (20-5), clears (19-17), shots on goal (33-10) and caused turnovers (8-7).
Freshman and points leader
Kaitlin Luccarelli tickled the twine a career-best five times and corralled a career-high five ground balls, while fellow freshman
Lexi Davis notched her eighth career multi-assist game with four on the afternoon.
Junior attacker
Charleigh Kondas got the scoring started early with her seventh tally of the season just :40 into the contest, kickstarting a 17-0 start for the blue and white that saw seven different players score.
Riley Dolan and
Molly Barkman added five assists each, both setting new career marks. Dolan's eight-point day – three goals and five assists – matched a career-high set earlier this season against Howard, while Barkman's identical scorecard - three goals and five assists – set a new personal best as well as winning a career-high 12 draw controls.
Sophomore defender
Cassie Angeles tallied her third game of 2017 with at least four goals, scoring three of her four in the opening half. Angeles' four-goal day give her an even 30 on the season to rank third behind Roberts' 37 and Luccarelli's 33 tallies.
In between the pipes,
Imani West picked up her sixth win of 2017 saving three shots and collecting three ground balls in 30 minutes before senior
Chelsea DiIonno and freshman
Laura O'Toole took over in the second half. DiIonno picked up a save and a ground ball while O'Toole had a team-best five saves on five Blue Hose shots on goal and collected four ground balls, both new career-highs for the freshman goalkeeper.
Presbyterian's lone tally came from Jess Goergen's eighth goal of the 2017 campaign at the 20:37 mark of the second half, ending the Lancers' 17-0 run over the first 39 minutes.
The lone tally mark surrendered marked the best defensive performance under fifth-year head coach
Elaine Jones, who took over prior to the Lancers' inaugural 2013 season in the Big South Conference. It was also the first time the Lancers allowed just one goal since March 21, 2004 when the Lancers defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 13-1 in Farmville.
Junior midfielder Andie DeCelis tallied a season-high three points with her first half goal and two assists, and freshman
Jessie Sawyer dished out her first career assist on Barkman's second goal of the opening half.
Longwood looks for back-to-back road victories as they take on Gardner-Webb in the regular season finale in Boiling Springs, N.C. First draw between the Lancers and Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m. at Spangler Stadium.
