BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Cassie Angeles and
Molly Barkman combined for eight of Longwood's tallies Saturday as the Lancers rolled to a 21-7 regular season finale victory at Gardner-Webb securing a five seed in the Big South Championships.
Saturday's win secured a top-five seed for the fifth-straight season dating back to the 2013 campaign, the Lancers' first as a member of the Big South Conference.
Longwood (7-10, 3-4 Big South) used a second-straight 15-goal first half to break open a contest that was close early before taking their foot off the gas in the second half, outscoring Gardner-Webb (0-17, 0-7 Big South) 6-3 over the final 30 minutes.
"It was nice for the team to end the regular season on a high note," said head coach
Elaine Jones, who has led the Lancers to at least a quarterfinals appearance in each of her first five seasons in Farmville. "I thought they played a very sharp game on Thursday against Presbyterian as they kept up the pressure and intensity for the whole 60 minutes."
The Lancers once again controlled most facets of the game from the opening draw including shots (34-15), shots on goal (29-11), draw controls (15-14) and caused turnovers (11-5).
Two-time Big South Freshman of the Week
Molly Barkman had four goals and an assist, and won eight draw controls with two caused turnovers, and Angeles finished the afternoon with a 1.000 shot percentage, finding the back of the net on all four attempts she fired away.
Freshman and points leader
Kaitlin Luccarelli added two goals and two assists while picking up a team-high four ground balls in the win. Luccarelli's four-point effort pushed her across the 50-point threshold for the season heading into the conference tournament.
Sophomore sensation
Stephanie Roberts added a hat trick with three goals to wrap up the regular season with 47 points, one of five Lancers with 40-plus in the 2017 season – Luccarelli, Roberts,
Riley Dolan, Barkman and
Lexi Davis.
Davis added a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists, her ninth multi-assist performance in her first season donning the blue and white. Davis also enters the conference tournament on a five-game multi-assist streak after Saturday's win.
In between the pipes, senior goalkeeper
Chelsea DiIonno picked up her first win of the season after getting her second start in the past three games. DiIonno saved three shots and picked up a ground ball in just over 30 minutes of action before freshman
Laura O'Toole and junior
Imani West finished the contest in the net.
Charleigh Kondas and
Dana Joss both added two goals off the bench with Joss taking three draw controls.
Maddie Stephens paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with a career-high four tallies, as their team-leader in goals Amanda Steinmuller was held without a goal, but did add two assists.
"Overall, in two games, we had contributions from everyone on both offense and defense, which is always nice to see," Jones said. "That being said, we still have things to work on this week as we prepare for a rematch against a challenging Liberty squad in the quarterfinal round of the Big South tournament."
Longwood finishes as the five seed ahead of the 2017 Big South Lacrosse Championships and will travel to fourth-seeded Liberty Saturday, April 29 for a quarterfinals matchup, their first showdown in the conference tournament in conference history. First draw is set to go up at 12 p.m. from Lynchburg, Va. and will be livestreamed on the Big South Network.
