Buccaneers Blitz Lancers 6-1 In Season Finale

Lancers Drop Season Finale to Second-Place Bucs

FARMVILLE, Va. – Behind straight-set wins in five singles courts and dominant doubles play, second-seeded Charleston Southern took a 6-1 decision in the regular season finale over the Longwood women's tennis team Saturday morning from the Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts.

Charleston Southern (15-2, 7-1 Big South) set the tone early with 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 wins in doubles play to take an early 1-0 lead. The 6-3 win by Kimberley Koerner and Yana Morar ended the eight-match streak Anna Pelak and Mason Thomas had rolling after Longwood's win at Radford just six days ago.

Buccaneer ace Sophie Cloessner took down Longwood's Marija Venta by a pair of 6-2 scores to lead a lineup that took five of the six singles courts in two-set fashion.

Lancer senior Paloma Alatorre picked up the lone tally mark with a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) comeback on court four, her fourth win at that slot and seventh of the season. Alatorre is also riding a four-match win streak heading into the Big South Championship next week, two of those four wins coming against conference counterparts.

Mason Thomas, who had an eight-match streak of her own in singles, fell to counterpart Valeria Koussenkova 6-3, 6-1 on court five. Thomas leads the team with 12 singles wins, including a 6-1 mark at court five.

Jamie Breunig, who has been in the top two slots of the lineup all season, fell at court two 6-2, 6-0 and senior Anna Pelak – who clinched the Lancer victory at Radford – fell at court three by 6-3, 6-2 scores. Fallon Burger dropped a hard-fought match at court six 6-4, 6-2 to Yana Morar to round out the morning.

The Lancers head into the Big South Championships next week at the eight seed and will face Radford, who they took down Sunday, on Thursday morning with the winner moving on to play top-seeded Winthrop on Friday. Match time against the Highlanders is set for 9 a.m. from the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
